RUMOURS OF A RIOT.
PRECAUTIONS BY POLICE. CARTERTON, Monday. 'J here was great surprise here on .Saturday night at the visit of a strong posse of police and military picket in consequence of a rumour of a projected riot which, however, did not start, Carterton's first intimation being the arrival of the police. The military pickets left on Saturday night. The police partolled the grounds of the house where the alleged traitor's parents live until Sunday night, but everything was guiet, and the police have now left the town.
