He was the son of Mr and Mrs H. De Ville, of London street, Hamilton, and was born at Te Kahu, near Te Awamutu, where he received his education. He later worked at tanning pursuits in various parts of the Waikato, and was generally recoernsed as a "good sport." He left New Zealand as a member of the 9fch Reinforcements in the Rifle Brigade.
