HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

HEAVY LIST OF BUSINESS. The adjourned meeting of the Hamilton borough Council, held last evening, was attended by His Worship the Mavor (Mr J. R. Fow), and Crs. Tristram, McKinnon, Watts and Booth. CROSSING DANGER. 'jg% The secretary of the Auckland Automobile Association reported that he h*i' received a reply from the General Man- t ager of Railways with regard to the level crossing between Hamilton and Claudelands. The Department was not prepared to vary the proposition which it made to the Council, Mr Hiley contending that the crossing was not particularly dangerous, as a fair view could be obtained when approaching it.

On the motion of Cr. McKinnon, it was decided to write to the Department seeking the knowledge if they were prepared to go on with the scheme of a 40ft subway as previously submitted. This would cost something like £2500, and the Mayor pointed out that it was possible that a lair sum would be obtained for the, work by way of private subscription. A TAR SPRAYER. Messrs William Coward and Co., Ltd, Bishopsgate, London, offered to supply a tar spraying machine to the Council. The machine recommended was of a capacity of 250 gallons, fitted with a patent surface suction gear and indicator, and the cost was £12(5 f.o.b. London. A smaller machine of 160 gallons capacity would cost £ll2 f.o.b. London. —The matter was referred to the engineer for report. ADVERTISING THE TOWN. The proprietors of the Auckland Weekly News intimated that they were devoting a section of the Christmas Number to describing and illustrating the progress and development of some Vf the important towns of the Dominion. They offered space to accommodate an article and illustrations of the town for £36 per page net. A request of a similai nature, at £3O per page, was forwarded by the Weekly Press proprietors.—The communications were merely "received" by the Council.

DANGEROUS DITCH. Mr M. G. Bell drew attention to the dangerous state of the drain in Liverpool street, leading from Hardley street along the boundaries of the properties of Rev. J. T. MeWilliam and the writer to the river. The drain was an open one, entirely unprotected, and at the writer's gate was fully seven feet deep. —Referred to Works Committee and engineer for report.

DEALING WITH LEASES. Messrs Swarbrick and Swarbrick, borough solicitors, asked the Council to instruct its engineer to prepare plans, etc.j for the registration of leases of sections facing Yialor and Selkirk streets, to be taken under the Land Act as soon as po>sible.—The clerk explained tiiat he had instructed the engineer to act accordingly. The same firm intimated that they had obtained execution of the surrender ot Harwood's lease, which was ready for the Council's execution. They also enclosed an account against the Council ior 1:1 made by Messrs O'Neill and Stew art, who acted for Harwood in the matter, and who claimed that they were entitled to prepare the surrender and that the Council should pay. The writers were of the opinion that this contention was not correct, and unless the Council had entered into an agreement to pay Harwood's costs they could not advise them to do so.—lt was resolved to act on the solictors' advice re the claim made. REASONABLE AID. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. .McKinnon, it was resolved to give Mr S. Tombs a reasonable entrance, provided there were no legal difficulties, from River load to his property.—Cr. Tristram said that he did not believe in spending public money on private property, but after seeing the present property he was in favour of doing as the motion suggested. Mr Tombs would be put to considerable expense through the action of the borough workmen, and among other things would require to shiit his motor shed and wash-house. EXEMPTION SOUGHT. Mr H. A. Hopkins, solicitor, asked the Council to note in the rate-liook that Mr R. F. Sandes had signed a transfer of section 24, part lot 233, of the parish of Kirikiiiroa,. to the Auckland Provincial Patriotic and War Relief Association. The date of the gift was April 1, H)IG, and of the transfer June I, 1910*. The writer'asked if the Conn il would exempt Mr Sandes f'om rates this year, ov was it too later'— The Council resolved that it could not accede to the request. ERECTING SIGNS. Mr F. J. Marfell, motor agent, applied lor permission to erect.a swing signboard over the lootpath in front oi Shaw s parage, where he intended to occupy premises. The- Hamilton Hardware Co., Ltd., made a similar request in respect to their premises.— Permission was granted to erect signs in accordance with the by-lawg and subject to the approval o: the engineer. VARIOUS MATTERS. Messrs Thomson and Farrer, civil engineers, asked that a drainage be made from Mrs W. J. Hunter's property, in Clarence street, to the borough diain.— Referred to engineer.

Mr R. \\'. Kihblewhite asked that attention be given tiie Opoia road and footpaths, and pointed out that a gaslamp was an nt necessity at tile two corners of the road.—Received. Messrs iJiinieli and Cray, architects, writing on ijehalf or Messrs Souter and Co., rquested the Council to bring the footpath fronting the firm's premises up to the usual grade.—Referred to engineer.

The National Reserve applied for permission to store rilies in a small room at the Horse Bazaar.—Granted.

Mr F. Nelson sought permission to connect drains from two houses in Rostrevor street to the outlet connecting the main sewer.—Granted, subject to the approval of the Inspector. Messrs MacDia.ro.iid and Mears, solicitors, writing in respect to matters concerning the estate of W. A. Graham, deceased, stated that a renewal of the lease" oi sections 83-5, Hamilton East, was not required.—Received. Mrs Margaret Scott made a renewed request for the erection of a lamp near her residence on Boundary road.—rThe Gas Works Committee will report oil the request, in addition to athers of a • similar nature, at next meeting of the Council.

The Education Board, Auckland, intir mated that the Hamilton West School, Committee had reported that nothing had been done by the Council in regard to the battering of the bank on Hinemoa street frontage and asked that the work be done.—lt was resolved to * inform the Board that the Council would adhere to its former resolution to batter the bank from the original {in to lin , j to lin to lin provided the Board paid the extra cost. *m Messrs J.
