IRRESISTIDLE RUSSIAN ATTACKS
EFFECTIVE ARTILLERY FIRE. ELABORATE FORTIFICATIONS DEMOLISHED. , Recevied Jauuary I*3, ~>.~> p.in. LONDON, January L>. The I'etrograd correspondent of the London Times states that prisoners taken on the south-western front are unanimous in their testimony as to the irresistible character of the Russian attacks in Galicia and Rukovifla. They speak of the Russian bayonet charges with unfeigned horror. The Russian artillery fire was so overwhelming that the strongest fortifications were wrecked in Bukovina. and General Mackensen's works speedily demolished on the Strypa River. The cannonade was so awful that the fire-swept area looked as if it had been subjected to an earthquake. Deep pits alternated with mounds of earth which had been blown up. Wire entanglements tailed to chock the onslaught of the Russian infantry.
The elaborate character ol the Austrian and German trenches on the Strypa indicates that the enemy confidently expected to occupy them for the entire winter. The soldiers' shelters were literally rooms furnished with stoves, tables and beds. The officers had luxurious washstands. spring mattresses, book cases, and upholstered chairs.
Mr Lloyd George has sent the following message to the Russians : "Warmest greetings to our valiant Allies. The time is soon coming when on both fronts we will face the enemy on conditions of complete equality ;>s regards munitions. and with numerical superiority on our side.'' i
