IN THE CALKANS
MONTENEGRO'S PLIGHT
INDEPENDENT EXISTENCE IM PERILLED.
LONDON, .January 15
The Times, in a leader, says the lall of Mt. Lovtchen places Montenegro at the mercy ol an enemy, and her independent existence is imperilled for the first time in her heroic history. It is unknown whether King Nicholas will continue the unequal struggle or make terms with the Austrians. The latter alternative is possible. It points out that the failure of the operations in the Adriatic is due to the tardy allied comprehension of the strategic importance of the Balkans, and it wonders that Italy allowed so important a position as Mount Lovtchen to be lost without making efforts to support .Montenegro. Nevertheless, it adds, misfortune is not the occasion for recrimination. It should spur up the Allies to speedily gain redress.
