LOCAL AND GENERAL.

A meeting of the Committee of the Hamilton Swimming Club will be held in the Baths rooms this evening at 8 o'clock to arrange for the coming carnival.

A London message states that General Stopford has asked the War Office for leave to sue Sir lan Hamilton for defamation of character.

To those in search of small holdings at exceedingly easy terms, a perusal of the replace advertisement of Messrs T. Mandeno Jockson on the back page should prove of interest.

The secretary of the late Carnival Committee informs us that there are still a few copies of the Carnival cookery book unsold. The book is obtainable from Mr C. F. Bond, bookseller, Hamilton, at the price of Is. That the endeavours of local enthusiasts to establish perch in the Hamilton Lake have, been successful were fully demonstrated by a lady angler, who on Wednesday afternoon took no less than five fish, all of which gave excellent sport.

While on a visit to Hamilton yesterday the Minister of Health (Hon. G. W. Rusesll) was shown over the Old Men's Home. The defects were quite obvious to him, and after a brief inspection he sanctioned the erection of a new home on the understanding that the Board does not claim the subsidy promised by the Government until the year following the termination of the war. He also sanctioned additions to the Nurses' Home on the same understanding. There was again a good attendance at the Searchlight Mission Tent, Hamilton, last night, when Evangelist A. Chesson showed from the Scriptures that there could be no thousand years of peace preceding the Lord's coming, nor could war be abolished until Jesus comes. The mission will be continued to-night, the subject being "The greatest land settlement scheme the world has ever seen."

A special meeting of the Hamilton Golf Glub was held last evening to consider a draft lease from the Domain Board to the Golf Club. Under the proposal the essentials of which have been agreed to by all the necessary parties, the owners of the Hamilton golf links will exchange the links for about 30 acres of land in Palmerston street. Provision is made whereby the Board will lease the golf course to the club at £2OO a year, and make absolute and full provision for playing. Any of the public can utilise the links apart from the club. The land being taken over in Palmerston street will have a first-class street made to it, and. a park Trill also be formed near the river, part of the land being given by the Council, part by the Domain Board, and part by Mr H. T. Gillies. This will require to have the consent of the Minister of Internal Affairs. The transaction is one of considerable importance, and will mean that the Palmerston street property will be converted into a first-class residential portion of Hamilton.
