KAMO HOTEL BURNED.
NARROW ESCAPE OF THE GUESTS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. WHANGAREI, Monday. The Kamo Springs Hotel, which the Whangarei Hospital Board proposed to purchase as a convalescent home for soldiers and other purposes, was completely destroyed by fire yesterday. The licensee and owner, Mr Jasper Montgomery, found his bedroom full of smoke at 5 a.m., roused his wife and two children and also six guests who were staying at the hotel. The latter, who were sleeping upstairs, were all obliged to escape in their night attire, losing their personal effects. The licensee lost £l5O worth of jewellery in the flames. The fire is believed to have been caused by a defective chimney. The insurances, which were held by the United Insurance Company, amounted to £2040, but the loss is estimated at double that amount. The sanatorium and baths escaped.
