WASH-OUT ON MAIN TRUNK.
ALL TRAFFIC DELAYED.
A number of slips on the 100-mile section of the railway line between Te Kuiti and Ohakune caused. through traffic on the Main Trunk line to be completely disorganised yesterday. The heavy rains which had fallen in that part of the country brought down a small slip at Taringamotu, the station immediately northward of Taumarunui, shortly before 1 o'clock yesterday morning, and delayed the northbound express, which arrived in Auckland at ten minutes past eight, instead of a quarter to seven. This small slip was the forerunner of others of greater magnitude, and one between Kakahi and Piriaka, about seven miles south of Taumarunui, caused a partial derailment of the engine, of the express from Wellington, which was due at Frankton about noon. The passengers on the express had to be transferred to a relief train despatched from Taumarunui. Later a big slip occurred between Te Kuiti and Puketutu, and the train had to Ik? held at Taumarunui. Further slips occurred at Owhango, 18 miles south of Taumarunui, amd a big wash-out is reported from Pokako, 10 miles north of Ohakune. The* Railway Department reported late in the night that through train service between Auckland and the South had been suspended, and that the train timed to pass through Frankton at 3.30 to-day would probably not
Owing to slips on the StratfordWhangamomona line, which is being built, to connect with the main line at Okahukura, near Taumarunui, traffic there has been suspended.
