DOUBLE HEALED COIN
TAMARUNUI, Tuesday
At the Magistrate's Court to day, before Mr F. O'B. Loughnan, S.M., three men, Charles Hadden, Glen Barclay,, and C. Nelson, were .charged respectively with owning, keeping, and using a common gambling-house at Manunui. A man named Bradiey gave evidence to the effect that he played two-up with them in Barclay's room, and lost £4 10s. He decame suspicious of foul play, and caught the pennies in the air. He found one to be a double-herded penny. He tried to retain the latter coin, but was forced by the others to give it up. He asked for a refund of hie losses, but this was refused. Messrs Sharpies .and Tustin defended the accused, and submitted that one occasion did not prove use, and that consequently Barclay's room could not be proved' to he a common gamins-house.
The magistrate held' that the fact of the game not being equally favorable! to all the players constituted the place a common gaiming-house within the mean in- of the Aot. He regarded Barclay ami Nelson, and a third man, not yet before the Court, as unmitigated swindlers, who had conspired to, fleece Bradley.
