The Meat Trade.
POSITION OP NEW ZEALAND
The London correspondent of tbs Pastoralists' Review says :—"I notice in the New Zealand papers that a recent visitor to the Dominion connected with the meat trade stated that New £ieal a nd meat was as -good as English. I!' so, freezing must -be a considerable drawback to, it, otherwise there would, not be the difference dn price between the two descriptions there is on the wholesale market. In considering this point it is well that meat men in New Zealand should note the great improvement which of late years &as taken place in Australian and Argentine mutton. The ground for a recent prosecution on the part of the New Zealand Government .here was the claimed superiority of New Zealand to Australian mutton. Well, that superiority is lessening year by year. About fifteen years ago Australian aep exported were mostly tiny merino carcases, and Argentine sheep had lanky hindquarters and thick heavy fores. The visitors from New Zealand to Smithfiekl must observe as they walk along the avenues of the market the change which has taken place. Swift's and the other shops now show model mutton in every respect."
