SPRING FLOWER SHOW.

OPENED .THIS AFTERNOON

SPLENDID DISPLAY OF BLOOMS

Although the early frosts have militated considerably against the efforts of horticulturist to produce good blooms, yet the warm spell which followed, to a large extent retrieved the lost opportunities, and but for the heavy rains, of the past few days, the spring flower show of the Hamilton Horticultural Society which opened at the Hamilton Town Hall, this afternoon, would have surpassed by far any previously held in the district. As it is, jbe exhibition is superior in many respects to the ones of the past two seasons and although a few of the ex--, hi'bitors cut their blooms before -tlis heavier of the downpours, yet the majority in the hope of presenting their exhibits at the show with a fresh blush, -tarried too long, with the result that considerable damage was wrought tthem by the rain. The building in which the show is being held presents a very pretty picture, and the decorations can be claimed as the most artistic yet carried out tinder the society's auspices. Of course the number of exhibits dees not nearly reach those of the summer shows, but this gives greater room for display, which the committee has proved itself well able to make the most of. The prevailing | color is the lemon tint of the daffodil, of which there are some excellent specimens, despite the lateness oi the season for this flower, especially in the exhibits of Mr Buckland, of Cambridge., (180 varieties), Messrs Cooper of Wellington, and Messrs Forres's and Best of Hamilton, the premier bloom of the whole daffodil exhibit /being' undoubtedly the "Glory of Leyden," forwarded by Mr Buckland. The season has been a rather poor one for anemones, owing to the early frosts, but violets have grown in great profusion, and are well in evidence by their rich coloring and fragrance. The show of frescias i s very poor, the entries being small, while the quality is somewhat below that of last season. Pet plants, too, are conspicuous by snia.llniess of numbers, while the collection of vegetables is only fair numerically, though well up in quality. The . outstanding feature of the whole show is the table decorations, there being no less than thirteen entries which, taking them as a whole, are a high tribute to the taste and artistic ability of the ladies of the 'district. The arrangements are in the hands of an able corn'mittae, with •Dr. Douglas as president and Mr E. B. Davey as secretary and treasurer, to whom credit ds due for their successful carrying out. The show was opened at 3 o'clock this afternoon by the Mayor, Mr J. A. \oumg, who congratulated the Society upon such an excellent realisation of its efforts.
