While working' at the top of the shaft at the Extended Mine at Hurutly, Herbert Minnear got bis foot caught between a lull coal-skip and the rail. It was thought that the bone 'ha< 1 been cut, and the tendon crushed. The arrival of Dr. MacDianmidt however, showed that the heel had been very severely bruised, neither bone nor tendon having been injured. The Huntly Oddfellows held the fifth animal ball on Friday, the result being stated to be the success of the season. Clout, Crowder, Christiansen, Williams, Turton, Misses Low and Parkes, Bros. J. Clout, M. Kirkwood, Biddulph, T. McQuillar, J. Moroney, T. Spence, and Dodds, and D. C. Low (secretary). Messrs Moroney, Kirkwood, and Spence proved assiduous as M.C.'s. To-morrow at 2.20 p.m. at the Town Hall the Mayor (Mr J. A. Young) will open the Hamilton Horticultural Society's spring show. Entries have come in freely and competition bids fair to be very keen. A stifclving feature of the show will be narcissi, of which some very choice blooms ha v e been entered. Floral decorations will also be a feature of the exhibition, record entries having >been received. An exhibit well worth seeing will be of 120 varieties of daffodils by Mr W. F. Backhand, of Cambridge. Mr Cedric Cooper, of Hutt Valley, is sending up 50 Varieties of cut flowers, also for exhibition. The president's trophy for narcissi is causing keen competition, there being q'uite a number bient on securing the coveted trophy. Table decorations, ladies' sprays, ajnd buttonholes are especially strong classes. The popularity of the Empire Picture Company's entertainment was again in evidence on Saturday night, when another large audience witnessed the last production of the fine series of pictures, comprising last week's progs amine. A most enjoyable exhibition was given, and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. The star item of this week's programme to be screened on Wednesday evening next, will be "The Fall of Troy," the great Greek pl ay that has proved such a success in the big picture theatres of the cities. It is enacted by over 800 actors, and the superb costumes and beautifully mounted scenes are said to surpass anything In grandeur yet attempted.
