REQUESTED TO " (By Mail.) MELBOURNE, Aug. 21. A fracas outside an hotel led to Arthur Murray, aged 17 years, appearing before the Collingwood Court on a charge of assault. Arthur Benning, a chafieur, residing at Fitzroy, \ stated that about 5 p.m. on Wednesday he drove up to an, hotel in Elizabeth street, Richmond, with a man named Wilmott. The defendant and two companions vware outside. One of them asked witness to I" shout " for them. A man named Dunn struck Wilmott and knocked him down. Murray struck witness and knocked him down. When a constable arrived witness gave defandant in charge. After othei} evidence had been given, Murray, who had two previous convictions, was fined £5, in default one month's imprisonment. OLD MAN'S STORY. MELBOURNE, Aug. 30. An old man who gave the name of William Carrington Smith Heale, and who said that he was the oldest colonist and the highest mason in the Commonwealth, denied in the City Court to-day that he had insufficient lawful means of support. The accused, on oath, stated that be had bee n a banker for 33 years. For 18 years he was manager of the London Chartered Bank at Maryborough, and for five years was superintendent in Sydney at a salary of £IOOO a year. He earned a living now by selling light wood. •' I make 18s 6d a week," he said. " I've earned so much that I've never troubled to apply for the old' age pension." There were several previous convictions on similar charges against Heale, and the old man *was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment. Ha threatened to have the matter brought before Parliament.
