RAGLAN COUNTY COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING

The chairman, Cr. Johnstone, presided over the ordinary meeting of the RaigiLan County Council, at Ngiaruawahia yesterday. There were also present—Crs. Annandale, McKtnnon, Gfltfciison, Seavil, Ralph, Crawford, Colburn© and Bruce. SPECIAL RATING AREA. Eighteen settlers of the Wairamaratna district petitioned Council to lorm the district into a special rating area, and to authorise a loan of £3OOO for the purpose of metalling the road from the Opuatia bridge to three chains south of the trig cutting Wairajisarama bridge, and for necessary earthwork, etc. The clerk was instructed to write to the petitioners gixtng them all necessary information and form of procedure for obtaining the loan. TELEPHONE DEFICITS. The secretary to the Postal Department notified a deficit of £2 8s 9d on the Woodluigih telephone ser1, and asked Council to remit the amount.—The clerk said the amount had bean forwarded. A deficiency of Is 3d was also shown rj,n the Glanmurray section, whioh Council deeded to pay. RAISING CONTRIBUTIONS. The Under-Secretary of Public Works writing dn regard to raising contributions towards bridges, said it had always been held that subseotion 119 C f the Public Works Act, was sufficient authority to enable any local body, to contribute to the cost of a bpidge, to raise its solar e without & poll of the rsite*payers, which applied to the promoting as well as the other contributing bodies. TE MATA ROADS. Mr J. McCracken, of Te Mata wrote objecting to -the closing of certain roads unless Mr William Saunders adhered t 0 certain conditions regarding fencing, etc.—lt was decided to uphold the objection. OPOTORU-RAGLAN ROAD. The clerk of the Raglan Town Board called attention to the state of the road leading from the Opotoru bridge to Raglan, and asked Council to contribute £2O out of the £3O required to carry out the work and agree to contribute two I thirds of the cost of the upkeep of the road. The application was refused, it being decided that £5 each be contributed by the Whangaroa and Karioi ridings for one year. RIDING BALANCES. Mr J. Finnerty, ferry man at Huutly, reported that the pu n t rope had been 'broken several times during the past mooth by a rait of logs and a steam launch.—Received. DEVIATION WANTED, Mr P. S. Hill, of Raglan, wrote with reference to a deviation between the three streams and Raglan.—Received. A HARAPEPE ROAD. Mr W. B. Starky, of Te Pahu, drew attention to the necessity of improving the road from the Harapepe section to the bush section. — Agreed to contribute £5. TE UKU ROAD. The Te Uku Landing Shed Company asked the Council to endeavor to have the unme tailed portions of the Te Uku road gravelled during the coming summer. They also asked that the Council, as the Whangaroa Harbor Board, to furnish a hand winch and wire rope out of the funds of the Board.— Agreed to.

SUPERVISOR'S REPORT. The County Engineer presented has report, in which he stated that plans had been prepared for the Port Waikato road ; that the metal breaking contract at Cumming's quarry was progressing favorably ; a 22ft. span bridge had !>een completuleted out of i-he Glasgow Road grant ; contract No. 17 would be | restarted as soon as possible ; plans | for McGuire's or Mercer Road would] , .be ready at the end of the week ; ' thirteen three feet concrete pipes ; had been conveyed on to the culj vert site, and timber and other ma- ! tena-l for bitdge would be ordered | this week ; pipes far culverts on j Morrison's Road, and timber for | bridge was on the ground, while ! timber for Hunt's and Logan's | Road had been ordered. The Puroa road contract was nearing completion ; work on the Puroa to >Vaingiaro-Nigiaruawahiu road was in [ji at Dawson's -quarry had !>jen completed, while one in Burt's quarry had l>een thrown up, as .the contractor considered he could not continue at the price ; Palmer's Hill contract was practically completed ; the hill nealr Mrs Bruce's had been reduced ; the grade on the road -between Karamu and Kaniwhaniwha bridge would be reduced at an early date ; pipes had been placed on the road ;between Pohohau and Kaniwhar niiwha ; the Kauri to Harapepe contract had iHe&n completed, whtile the three span bridge at Te Pahu was completed ; sundry repairs hail been done an the Rag'lan-Wiaiipa road ;i the Te Mata to Te TJku contract had -been completed ; a deviation had been laid off on Kauri Hill ; levels had been taken of chains for large fillings and breast cuttings on the Te Mata to Ruapuke road; Bregmen's 'bridge instead of being repaired .would have to be renewed.
