Christmas pa,.ea cu quietly this u._trict There was a biggish crowd in the town on Christmas Eve, including a number of flaxmill employees, and the hotel* were well patronised, but everyone was quite orderly. The school breaking-up celebration took the form of a picnic at Te Akau this year, instead of tbe usual gathering in the school grounds. The owners of the launchei plying on the harbour generously placed thpir boats at the oommitteb's disposal to convey the children, their parent# and visitors aaross the water, and the outing proved very enjoyable. There are generally some accidents at Christmas time, and this year has not been an exception. On Saturd y a Maori boy named Where, who lives at Kuwhin, got thrown oi! a horse at Te Mata, and falling with his head on the root of a tree he was severely injured, the base of his skull bating fractured. He was taken to Mr Phillips' house, and Dr. Sanders was summoned from Raglan. Though the lad's life was at one time in great danger he is now making a recovery.

Mr E. VVatkins, of Te Uku, was driving home from the Kauroa faotory on Monday, when the horse shied and started kicking, upsetting the vehicle, and Mr Watkins wa» thrown out and sustained a broken rib. On Christmas Eve a man named Bell, who works for Mr Dent, at Kauroa, was oatchinga horse in Mr Carr's paddock at Raglan, with the intention if riding home, when the animal knocked bim down, breaking his collar-bone and injuring his left leg. He is at present laid up at View boardinghouse, under Dr. Sander's care.

\ isitors to Raglan at present include Mr and Mrs La Trobe, senr, of Cambridge, Mr F. Sims, of the Roads Department, and Mr F. Darrow, of Te Kuiti. It is two years since Mr La Trobe was here, and he notices signs of considerable progress having been made in that time.

A young man named Herbert Verce took a gulp of a poisonous lotion in mistake for hop beer a few days ago, but an emetic administered by Dr. fcanders soon put him out of danger.

A meeting was held on Saturday night (o form a syndicate to conduct boring operations for ooal on land in the vicinity of the harbour, but only a small amount of support was forthcoming.

The Postal Department is willing to open a post office at Kauroa, but no one living in a central position c»n be found who will undeitake the duties of pottmaeter.
