ITAKO. c The annual meeting of the Council wm held at le Aroha on Wednesday the l junty (llerk, Mr J'. Gilchris , presiding Mr McCaw mcved that Mr T. Gavin be elected County Chairman for the ensuing year.—This was seconded by Mr Larney and carried unanimously. Mr Gavin thanked the councillors'for the honour done by re-electing him and took his seat as Chairman. On the motion of Cr Thomas, seconded by Cr. Larney. the County Chairman Cr McGloin and Mr Chepmell were elected to ropresent the Council on the Waikarn Hospital Board. "»l«MO SPECIAL MEETING. The Council would then oonsider the question of appointing a ranger.—Carried Mrs M. L. Morgan, Matamata, 'asked permission to ereot a verandah in front of her shep on Arawa-street. Permission was granted on the usual conditions. Messrs A. Thackeray and Skeat wrote agreeing to contribute, from thirds.the cost of laying pipes across the road near their properties. Resolved that the Chairman and Cr Donaldson arrange for the work tc be done. Mr Hosking, Te Bap», wrote revaluation of his property. On the motion of the Chairman the clerk was instructed to point out again to Mr Hosking the position of affairs, and to state that the rates must be paid, and the question of valuation did not rest with the Council. Millar's Australian Hardwood Company wrote re fire-resisting properties of jarrah and its suitability for buildings, etc— Received. It was reported that the gold duty for October amounted to £S lis. A. A. Holmes, Aratiatia, applied for a slaughtering licence. The application was referred to the Government authorities. The Te Aroha Town Clerk wrote* notify. ing that Crs. Rowe and Molndoe, with His Worship the Mayor, had been appointed a oommittee to confer with the committee appointed by the County Counoil. The Waipa County Counoil clerk wrote fiat urgent repairs to the Cambridge bridge must be carried out at a cost of about .£3OO. Messrs Porritt and Mueller advised»that they had been instructed to sue for balance of ti-tree tiken off nat'va land at Taramorahi, No. 3 Blook, for fascines. A further letter from Messrs Porritt and Mueller stated the facts of the claim to be that, in the oase formerly before the Court, £U) was chime! for 1600 fascines from Taramoarahi, No. 1 Block, but that it ap. peared the greater part were from No 8 Block. ■* Judgment was given for 55 bundles at 6d eaoh. The present claim is for the balance of 1545 bundles at 6deaoh, say £3B 12s 6d. There are 91 native owners of the Blook, and soma of these said that they gave no' consent to the cutting of the fascines. They, notably Hareta Raneira, Peka Raneira and Kere, olaim for value of their shares. Resolved that the Counoil repudiate the claim. Mr E. A. Death. Hora Hora, requosted theC.uncil to have repairs oirried out on the Hora Hora-Maungatautari road. Cr. Main said that the Foreman would shortly be in this locality and would have the work done. The Waikato County Clerk wrote that his Council would 00-operate in the endeavour to secure country representation on harbour boards. The Thames branch of the New Zetland Educational Institute wrote asking the Council for a donation towards the oost of providing an art instruotor for sohools in the GoMfields district. The letter stated that a sum of £lO per annum would have to be made up by contribution from local bodies, sohool committees and teachers. A letter was also received from tne Waihou school cjmmittee on the same subject.

The consideration was deferred. Messrs B. B. Morgan and Co., Matamata, wrote asking the Council to appoint an inspector of weights and measures for the distriot. Cr. McCaw moved, That the constable in charge of the district be asked to take up the duties of Inspector of Weighta and Measures.—Carried, 7 The Chief Engineer, Department of Roads, forwarded a copy of a Model By. laws Bill, for coniideratioa by the Council. Foreman Mahood reported that various works ordered on Okoroire-Tapapa road, Ferguson's gully, Pott's hill and Fisher's hill, ete., had been finished, and that other works in this district were in hand. Foreman Johnson's report was read"and agreed to. Resolved that tenders be called for McLaren Bridge and for two small bridges on the Waitoa-1 irau road. The following tenders were dealt with.

Contract r- o 2.—1. Hanks 2s 7d per yard accepted. No. |3.—E. Brokenshire • 445 lrs; W. Hodgson (accepted) £25.* No. 4. J. Hanks 2s t>d per yard. No. 5. Young and Beeson £1 12s and £1 8s for two sections respectively.—Declined. No. 6. —E. Brokenshire £9 ss.—Aooepted. Mr Thomas moved that Mr Jones be asked to contribute to the cost of this work. Seconded by Mr McGloin. The Chairman moved that the work be done at the expense of the County. Seoonded by Cr. Larney. Some little time was spent in discueßing this and other questions, but the amendment was finally oarried by five votes to two. Resolved that a oommittee consisting of the Chairman and the clerk take over "the affairs of the merged Waitoa road distriot, and deal with all matters requiring attentun pending the next meeting of the Council. Cr. Thomas oalled the attention of the Council to the current report that Mr W, Garret, Distriot Valuer, had determined to sever bis oonnec»ion with the Government, and desired the Council to give expression to the general feeling of regret that this should be the case.—Cr MoCaw and other councillors said they were only reflecting the general opinion of settlers, in speaking highly of Mr Garratt's servioes. He had won the estejm of the settlers by his taot and impartiality, and his retirement would be a distinct loss to the M community and to the State.
