NGARUAWAHIA ROWING CLUB.

From Ocr Own Correspondent The rowing season waß opened by the tfgaruawahia Rowing Club on Wednesday last. Unfortunately, the weather broke on that day, and an otherwise successful and pleasant afternoon's sport was somewhat damped by slight rain, that started towards 3 pm. In spite of this, however, a good ouster of the publio rolled up to witness the trials in outriggers and the mixed pur?, and when the rain fell, found plenty i accommodation in the spaciou3 rowing shed and on the baloony, where afternoon tea was served by the ladios of the Bowing Ciub under the leadership of Mr W. PatersoD, who made a thorough suooess'of this impoitant department, and which ■vas appreciated both by the visitors and the cro.vi. The Hamilton Rowing Clnb w»s represented by members, who, in spite if the threatening look of the weather, rollbd up to help the sport and being quests of the Club were entertanied until their departure by the late train. It is to be hoped that the local Club will vtteud the opening of the Hamilton Club, and little courtesies like this, bind the two rival Clubs into feeling of comradeship. The racing was good oon--idering the untrained state of the orews, close finishes were the rule, particularly in in the pair oars, where a lady stroked, there being a gentlemen in No 1 seat.affording fun iUo to the spectators, as a good many competing had not handled an oar previously. The winners in the foura turned iip in a crew under a uew stroke, H. Henlurson, who shaped pxcedingly well; the ladit * pairs being uu finished, th« finals' were postponed until a later dute. The trophies tor the fours were presented by the Club, the pair oared trophies being givan by Mr Walsh and Mr Materson. It is propped to have another afternoon'i sport about 28th Nov, when it is to be hoped a line ifternoon wid be given the Club. It is announced that the local Regatta Committee have presented a Ccal. euge Cup for competition between the two Clubs, and that the first o mtest is shortly to be pulled off. It is things hke this that greatly foster the -port of rowing and the generous treatment meted out by the Begata Committee, in presenting a ohallenge shield for ■ouipe'iti n at the local regatta and now v cup for competition between the two iliuost looil clubs, says much for their enthusiasm in rowing matters. Thelooal-V Club has be<n thoroughly reoganised on better lines and promises to be more prominent in this season's regatta. In the ■Bptaio, Mr C. Hisling, the Club has lecured the services of an enthusiast and on' gifted with a very necessary quality, tuct, and tucked up a by strong oommittee and oltlcors should make the Club take >i more prominent position than in the p.ist. Members are freely joining; so much so, that we are confidently locking forward to ' retaining the coveted shield at next regatta against our friendly rivals of other country clubs.
