CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH

COUNCIL.

♦ ■ The ordinary monthly meeting of the Council was held last evening, there heing present:-The Mayor (Mr W.F. Buckland), Crs. J. Hally, G. E. Clark, R. Davies, F. O'Toole, J. Ferguson, C. C. Buckland and E. J. Wilkinson.

New- Courthouse.— The Secretary of the Cambridge 5000 Club wrote asking the support of the Council in an endeavour to secure a new Courthouse building for Cambridge. In this connection Mr H. J. Greenslade, M.H.R., forwarded for the information of the Council, a letter from the Minister for Justice, in which it waß stated that the representations nude would be considered when the Publio Works Estimates were being prepared.—Mr GreensUde was thanked for his letter, and a resolution was passed urging on the Minister the necessity for the speedy erection of a new courthouse. Country Representation on Harbour Boards.—The Clerk to the Piako County Council wrote asking the Council's cooperation in the nutter of securing for country settlers representation upon the Auckland Harbour Board.—lt was decided to refer the matter for further information.

International Exhibition.-Mr Allen Bell, secretary for the Waikato Court at the above Exhibition, wrote asking the Council to increase its vote towards the cost of a VVdikato exhibit.—Messrs Veale and Tudehope waited on the Council in support of the applic*tion. It was stated that another .£6O would be required to fulfil the engagements so far as the Waikato court was concerned. Due economy had been observed in all the arrangements. —The m itter was referred to the works ooinuiittee.

Borough Swamp. The Cambridge Chamber of Commerce wrote expressing approval of the movement to drain this swamp.—Received,

Superannuation Scheme.—lt was decided to contribute 10s 8d towards the proposed scheme. Load Grader.—The works committee recommended the purohase of a second haud road grader from Messrs McLean Broi. at -£ss.— Messrs W. Souter and Co. submitted a quotation for a "Champion" machine, .£BS, f.o.b. Wellington.—lt waß decided to purchase the grader from Messrs McLean.

Borough Leases.—Mr P. M. La Trobe wrote that in the case of a short lease for a low rental it seemed an unnecessary expense to have a proper legal lease drawn up.—The Council decided that a proper lease was necessary. Gas Matters.—The Gasworks Committee reported in regaid to an offer from the Imperial Lighting Company to supply gas fittings to the Council on consignment on favourable terms.—lt was decided that if Mr Smithie's report is favourable, the Counoil accept the oiler. Tenders.—The following tenders were received for steel kerbings : Andrews and Gall, £305 16s (about Is lOd per foot); C. A. Care, £lB5 12s 6d (or Is \\\ per foot) lineal. The letter's tender was aocepted. The matter of the levels was left to Mr Bunyard and the streets improvement committee.

Dkainage Matter.—Messrs C. Roberts and C. Boyoe and dons wrote asking permission to connect their respective business premises with tije drain leading from the =umph at the 'junction of Duke and Victoria-street, across tho school grounds. —lt was decided that the request be not entertained.

Wobkinu Foreman. -Ten applications were received for the position of working foreman at £2 S3 per week, and Mr Muir, of Karaugahake, was appointed. Sanitation.—The sanitary committee reported that a nightsoil cart had been ordered and all the necessary arrangements made for establishing the new service over the whole of the borough.—The report was adopted,

Sanitary System.—A ratepayer wrote approving of the extension of the sanitary pan service, but stated his inability owing to oircumstances to contribute to the cost. —The Council decided that no exceptions whatever would be made.

Finance.— The financial statement showei the overdraft when accounts are paid at 6s 41, waterworks account, 7s 4d (dr). The various loan accounts showed small decreases, on account of money expended since last meeting.—The report was adopted.

SALEYAHDS.-Tho Mayor reported that the yards were oompleted, aud that the loan money had been exceeied by .£44. Pending an adjustment of balances, it was decided that the Couaoil draw up to its legal limit, and that in the meantime, the £l4 borrowed from the district fund account.

Notice of Motion.—Cr. (Jlark moved that the roads leading to the new saleyards be formal.--Jarried unanimously. He also moved that the work of draining the swamp near Victoria House be expedited.—A general discussion ensued as to the feasibility of draining this property either in an easterly or westerley direction. Several members considered that to drain the water into the lake would fill it up with silt. It was decided to urge the Stock Department to at ones drain the property, as the stagnation of the water was a menace to the community. -It was further resolved on the motion of Cr. C. C. Buckland, seconded by Cr. Clark, that the Government be asked to hand over the property named, for the purpose of a borough endowment. Water harue*.—The matter of water charges in the case of chimneys in course of erection was left to the discretion of the town clerk.
