WAITOMO CAVES
(By Telegraph.—Special to Waikato ! Times). WELLINGTON, This Day. Ia the course of the debate in the House last night on the Tourist and Health Resorts Controll Bill,Mr Greenslade said he desired to especially impress upon the Tourist Department the necessity for doing somethin,' more in regard to the Waitomo Caves. They were, some moaths ago, acquired by the Government, and rightly so. e felt justified in saying they were the finest caves in New Zealand. The old owes were very beautiful, but the new caves were exoeedifigly grand and quite unique, and were deserving of more attenti u ou the part of the Department than they had received in the past. The Btrange thing was that access to them had only been slightly improved, and for some months the road from Hangatiki railway station to the accommodation house was axle-deep in mud, through which the coach had to plough its way. That was not the way in which to encourage tourists to viiit these oaves, and realise the beauty and grandeur that there existed.
Mr Greenslade also urged thit the caves should be lighted by eleotricity, and he trusted that now attention had been drawn to the matter, the condition of the caves and their surroundiags would be muoh improved.
