WAIPA COUNTY COUNCL.

The Cur-cil tu-t at the Council Chambers, Ohaup-.., y sterday morning. JAe members present were Or. J. Fisher jS hairman), Allen, Duxrield,Grant, Macky, itothwell, putts and Gibson. Supervi->k's Kki-out. This was read a* foll.-ws: —Kihikii.i-l'e Awamutu road: Iho work of metalling ru the Kihikii.i roa! h as mi ,d- rather better progress at -ly, as the metal his been coming to hand more freely ; the original contract should be finished this week if the weather is at all suitable. As 11 the c ntiuuatiou of the work, if it is to be done at all this season, I think it had better go on right away and allow it to take precedence of the ether contr cts which by rights come before it. My reason for suggesting this is th it the unmet died portion of the road is rapidly beermu>g so cut up that to put metal on the r'ad later will be simply burying it. I am exceedingly doubtful even now of the wisd< mof going on with the work this

season. Whatawhata swamp road : The work of sanding on the Whatawhata swamp road is completed and although much moris required the contract has been satirfac torily carried out. An effort to obtain further assistance in the shape of a Government grant tor this road should be again made.—Contracts finished : The contract for gravelling on the HamiltonNgaruawahia road let to G. Washer is also completed. L. Cowley's contract for gravelling on the Ohaupo-Cambridge road wa--very nearly completed when I saw it last week, and I would like to have authority to pay for the work when measured up.— Walker's Gully: I have not yet succeeded in getnng anyone to undertake the work ordered at Walker's gully.—Shakespearestreet and other works : Riley has done tie repairs ordered on this street but it will be necessary to have more gravel put on the hill coming up from the bridge, as the clay has washed through to a certain extent. He is now at work on the Rotorangi Hill job. In connection with this I found that, in the part of the pit where he was getting the gravel, a change for the worse in quality had taken place. As this gravel is being carted abut four miles I told the contractor not to use any more from there, although he had a considerable quantity broken down, ready for removal. There is a portion of flit road much nearer the pit where this gravel might be used, and I would suggest that this be done.—Tuhikaramea road: Regarding the construe:ion of the new road at Tuhikaramea, I went over the road with Mawhinney and, with Cr. Rothwell's approval, I made an arrangement with Mawhinney to do the job by contract,-Burning clay: I regret to say that nothing is accomplished so far. I arranged with T. Tebbs to do the job but he finds a difficulty in getting fuel. His letter will be read.—Removal of gravel: f On visiting the gravel pit at No. 1 bridge I found two men busy screening grave], they told me that they were working by Mr Tebbs' orders. On inquiry from t'ebbs he told me that he had Cr. Bell's authority, so of course I told him to complete what he was about. Still, as I am told there are likely to be numerous similar applications, I am placed in a difficulty, as there is a resolution on the minutes in- ► Btrr>cting me to prevent removal of gravel from County pits or off County roads. Discussion then ensued. u road: The Chairman said two tenders had been received and the lowest tenderer was not the present contractor.— At a later stage of the meeting the tenders were read as follows :—J. B. Teasdale, 2s 3d per yard (carting) and 10s per chaia (opening and spreading); W. Lovett, 2s 4d per yard (carting) and 15s per chain (opening and spreading).— Cr. Johnsou

moved that Mr Teasdale's tender be acvcepted, the Council to reserve riLrht to stop the contract any time.—Seconded by Cr. Potts and carried. Whatawhata Swamp Road : On the motion of the Chairman, the supervisor was authorised to bring forward a report at next meeting as to what roads it was desirable to apply for Government grants. Seconded" by Cr. Duxfield and carried.—Cowley's contract, Cambridge road : The supervisor was authorised to pay for this work.—Burnt clay : Left in supervisor's hands to cither carry ■, out this work during the winter or next spring, as he found most suitable.—Seconded by Cr. Bell and carried.—Removal of gravel: Cr. Bell explained that the removal of gravel mentioned in the report was authorised at the meeting before last, —The supervisor pointed out that the gravel was being screened, to which Cr.

Bell replied that the metal was required *. for concrete and it saved cartage to screen the metal first He further ssid that he thought that if a settler wanted a f-iw loads of gravel, he should be able to obtain it without troub'e.—Cr. Allen said trouble had been formerly caused at Cambridge by the indiscriminate use of metal pits.—The supervisor said that when a settler had permissien to go into a pit it was impossible to check the amount taken. proceed against the property in the ordinary way.—A second letter was also read - from Mr Gerard stating that if the leases on which rates are claimed can be realised with profit to the estate, he would pay the rates, but otherwise he w-uld u?e his right to disclaim within two months after date on wfuch he became aware of the existence of such leases. —The Chairman mcvod that all rates in arrears be sued for without further notice.—Resolved accordingly. it over, as the sub-division plana were now being made out.—The Supervisor said no f one seemed to know where tho exact borough boundary wa-: as alterations had been made from the original gazetted boundary, but the road had been made and was satisfactory.—The request was agreed to.

New Road at Frankton.—Mr J. M. MoCarthy wrote re certain roads ho had opened up near Frankton railway station, asking that the Council take them over and also auggestiug that a new bridge bo built at a certain point and oilering to do the necessary earthwork.
