WAIKATO HOUNDS

The first meet of the season took place on Saturday last, the rendezvous being the Hautapu schoolhouse. Splendid weather prevailed, and there was a large attendance of huntspeople and their friends. Quite a number of small runs were indulged in, chiefly over the properties of Messrs Forrest and Banks. Although short, the runs were productive of much enjoyment. A lot of young and promising horses were out, some of them conducting as first class hunters, which argues well for this season's hunting, and means good fields at the annual hunt club race meeting. Spills were not nearly so numerous as often happens at the first meet. A notic able feature was that a l«rge number of farmers' sons were out, and displayed keen interest in the popular sport. The huntspeople repaired to the residence of Mrs Banks, senr, " Gwynnlands," and partook of this lady's hospitality in the shape of delicious afternoon tea. Before separating, hearty cheers were given for Mrs Banks, and also for the master of the hounds (Mr Norman Banks).
