HAMILTON ROWING CLUB.

OPENING OF THE SEASON. The official opening of the rowing season took place on the Hamilton Lake on Saturday. As a rule the Hamilton Club takes advantage of one of the general holidays for the occasion, but it was not possible to do so this year, and no doubt this affected the attendance, which was not as large a3 usual, A still westerly breeze was also blowing which made it rather chilly work for the onlookers, but as the events were keenly contested; and the finishes close, the afternoon was an enjoyable one to those who were present. Afternoon tea was kindly provided by Miss Roth well and other lady members of the nursing staff at the hospital, and competitors and visitors very much appreciated this little attention. The president of the club, Mr M. G. Farrer, an old " blue " and a well known enthusiast in 'rowing matters, picked the crews, and the toughly fought finishes showed that he was not far astray in his judgement of the results of the various oarsmen. Mr R. Bradley, vice-pre-ident of the club, was also on the ground and assisted the president to judge the various events which resulted as follows :

Trial Fours. —Holloway (stroke) Farrer, Bockett and Corbett, K. Hunter (cox) be Swarbrick (stroke) Elliott, Tyerman an" Furby, A. Swarbrick (cox). This was a remarkably close race, the winners only getting hj( me by a bare ijuarter of a length. I An accident to No. 2 in Swarbrick's boat had a good deal to do with their losing the race. Pair Oirs. —First Heat: Swarbrick and Peace beat Holloway and Corbett. Second heat: Elliott and Bockett beat Farrer and Horsnoll. In the final heat Elliott and and Bockett proved too sttong for their opponents, Tyennan and Furby. Cox,-wains Pair Oir. —A. Swarbrick (stroke) and hj". Hunter (bow), Corbett (cox) beat Pinfold (Mroke) and Mclvonzie (bow). Von Stunner (cox). This race was rowed by lads under 14, and was well contested. The winning crew, although light, had evidently made good use of the points leamod from the'r seniors)|wheii steering them to victory. The club appears to be progressing in a very satisfactory manner, there being n<*w close on 100 members on the books. Tiie boat shed has been repainted, and the gigs and pleasure boits thoroughly overhauled, | so that everything is in good working I order for the season. The energa.ic club] secretary, asks us to 3tate that working bees will be held every Wednesday and Saturday during the next four weeks for the purpose of erecting the new shed on the bank of the river just btlo v the traffic bridge, and also informed our reporter that a first class gig has tesr. ordered from the well-known Wellington boat builder, Norton, and on its arrival at the end of next month, the club will be in a good position to send crews to all the district regatta*.
