Though the shortest day is not due until a fortnight hence, the sparrows and blackbirds in Waikato have begun to build their nests—a sign, surely, of an early spring. An accident befell Mrs Jno. May, of Tamahere, yesterday afternoon. She had been on a visit, with her two children, to her sister, Mrs Thos. Something startled the horse and caused it to bolt, Mrs May being thrown right over the horse's head, sustaining slight concussion of the brain. Beyond a severe shaking, the children escaped unhurt. During the iifth week of the New Zealand eg,c-laying competition 11 additional pens joined in, and the number of pens without an egg decreased to 26. The total number of eggs for the week was 601, as against 394 for the previous week. The grand aggregate is 1682. H. Considering the inclemeut weather, there was a good attendance. After the oeremonpy, His Lordship aud party were entertained to luncheon and left shortly afterwards for Hamilton.

A unique and interesting exhibition of wood chopping and s wing will be given on Saturday evening next in the Volunteer Hall, Hamilton, by Messrs D. Pretty and C. W.
