TAUMARUNUI.

Feom our Own Correspondent. The ladies of Taumarunui gave a very pleasant social here on Friday evening list. Ihe hall, which was nicely decorated, reflected great credit on the members of the committee, consisting of the Misses Broughton, Harvey, Meredith and Howardson. Dancing, interposed with musical items, kept the ball rolling until 3 o'clock. Songs were given by Miss V. Harvey, and Messrs McGregor and A. Dallas. Miss Harvey fulfilled the duties of bon. sec, and Mr Henderson was M.C. The music was supplied by Miss M. Meredith (piano) and Mr J. Slattery (violin), and extras were played by Messrs S. Wilson and Winklemann. Mrs Galley kindly lent ber piano for the occasion. Work on the Main Trunk line is still going ahead, and the rails have been laid as far as Kakahi, the ballast train running out there daily. Workmen are at present laying the decking on the railway bridge over the Wanganui river at Matapura. When completed this will prove a boon to the people in the district, as the ford, which has been deepening since the last flood, is almost impasable.

A quoit match, 31 up, was held here yesterday, between " Jack " Allen and H. Newman, of Ohanga. After a very exciting game, Newman succeeded in defeating his opponent by 2 points. Mr Winkletuan, chemist, late of Otorohanga, has started business here, and after the land sale he intends to erect suitable premises with dwelling house at* tached.
