HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

+ This body held last night an ordinary adjourned meeting. Present : The Mayor (Mr \V. Dey), and Crs. Pearson, Davis, Bettley, Salmon, Parr, Hardloy, Young and Howden. Foreman's Report.—Foreman Quinn reported clearing and repairs at yards. The footpath in Selkirk-street had been formed from Loudon-street to Gray-street and crossings put in, and some water tables in London-street and many other places attended to. Some filling-in had been done in Clarence-street; Grey-street east hid been scraped down from Cook-street to Clyde-street and shingled where required, j aud 54 feet of kerbing had been done at Mr Taylor's new shop and a culvert put in | for Messrs Stone and Taylor. Willows had been cut down in River-road for the Telegraph Department, and other small jobs done. Ttie horse aud dray was at work every day, patching, etc. The place where water stands on the road in Ulsterstreet was being attended to. Decking timber was required for the traffic bridge, and the fenoes at the East cemetery needed repairs. The gravel carts would have to be put on as soon as the weather permitted—Adopted. Works Committee—This committee recommended that a chain of pipes be put in drain on Lot ioo at an estimated cost of £7, provided Mr Davis pays half; that a culvert be put in the drain on Mill-street, also that a culvert bo put in about threequarters of a chain south-west of drain, Mr Conradi paying for the pipes for the latter. 'The committee also reported that the work near Mrs Vowless' wa6 being attended to, and stated that it had no recommendation to make re cutting up Town B«dt on southwest side of Borough.—Adopted. Legal, and Finance Committee.—This Committee recommended that the list of accounts be passed for payment; that all graves in cemeteries be paid for, aud that a common be set apart in each cemetery for paupers ; that the west boundary road be dedicated, if Mrs Jolly will bear the expense and form the portion mentioned in the letter from Mr Percy Watts, solicitor. The Committee had no recommendation to make re Mr Boylan's appointment, nor in reference to providing instruments for the band, owing to lack of funds.—Adopted, Cr. Salmon dissenting re baud instruments. Waterworks. —The Waterworks Committee recommended that Rostrevor-street pipe line be ploughed to complete the line to E. J. Davey's, and that the turncock be instructed to put in »n air relief valve at the reservoir.— I'he turncock reported that 354,000 gallons of water had been pumped since last meeting, and 9360 it of gas consumed. Connections had been made and meters fixed at various places named. He suggested ploughing the road to finish laying pipes at Mr Davey's, and putting in stopcocks behind the valves at the reservoir to act as an air valve.—Adopted. Finance.—The treasurer reported: Debit balance, August 7th, 1904, £1291 15"sd, accounts passed £231 Os Id, paid since, wages £:3 lis 4d, deposit returned £SO, £1599 6s lOd. Receipts : Balance subsidy, £27 9s 3d, deposit £lO, rents £l9 8s 9d, dog tax £t 12s (id, crossingsJ£l 10s, auctioneer's permit 10s, affixing seal 5s 3d, rate 1903-4 and arrears i.7 13s 6d, water rate 9s lid, ten per cent. 16s Id, petty licenses £2, total £7l 15s3d. Balance £1524 lis 7d.— Adopted. Proposed New Street.—The Works Committee recommended the Council to open up the new liue of street between Hood and and that the land be taken under the provisions of the Public Works Act, 1594, and the Municipal Corporations Act, 1900, provided the promoters guaranteed by joint bond to pay all costs, Compensation moneys and expenses in connection therewith ; also the cost of forming and gravelling the new street, as provided by the Public Works Act, IH94.—Cr. Bettley moved, and Cr. Davis seconded, that the report be adopted and the Clerk take tho necessary steps.— Cr. Hardley thought the parties should do the work for themselves, as other people hail to. Crs. Pearson and Young explained the position as 9et forth by the speakers at the meeting reported in yesterday's issue of the Waikato Times.— The Clerk pointed out that the Works Committee's recommendation did not involve the forming and gravelling being done by the Council.- The Mayor and Cr. Bettley intimated that the promoters only asked the Council to undertake the legal preliminaries, not the horse and dray work."—The resolution was carried unanimously. Gret-steet West,—Messrs Ellis and Burnand wrote acquiescing in the Council's request that they should contribute £2O towards forming, gravelling, etc.. Greystreet West. Nixon-street.—Mr W. H. Mackenzie and eight others asked the Council to repair Nixon-street from Albert-Street to Naylor-street and Albert-street from Gal-loway-street to Grey-street.—Referred to Works Committee with power to act. Courthouse.—Cr. Bettley moved that the Department of Justice be urged to push en the erection of a District Courthouse and Land Registration Office, and that the Clerk should also forward to the Minister an expression of the opinion of Mr Meddings, of the Post and Telegraph Department, that there was no objection to locating the building on the Post Office site.—Cr. Parr seconded.—ln the course of further discussion, Cr. Young opposed the latter proposal and moved an amendment to strike it out. A site had been acquired by the Department through a special Act of Parliament, and it would be a more suitable one than that nefct the Post Office. To adopt Mr Bettlej's suggestion would cause delay.—Cr. Hardley seconded.—After further discussion the amendment was carried, the Mayor and Cr. Davis, Pearson, Y'oung and Hardley voting for it, and Crs. Salmon, Bettley, Pearson and Howden against. Dates ok Meetings.—Cr. Davis gave notice to move in favour of fortnightiy Council meetings. Pillar Box.—Oil the proposal of Cr. Y'oung, it was resolved to ask the Postal Department to place a pillar box at the junction of Clarence-street and Ohaupo rond. Endowments.—Cr. Davis moved that the Endowments Committee and the mover inspect all lease deeds and leased endowments and report to the Council. —Seconded oy Cr. Young and carried. —Further resolve! that sections 199, 205 and 210, West, ; now authorised for lea-e. be withdrawn until the committee's report is receive!. Lkhal Advice. —On the motion of Cr. Young, it was resolved to take the advice of the Council's solicitor, re the'drain on Mr Davis' property mentioned in the Works Committee's report.
