RAGLAN.
From Our Own Correspondent. Since the .nuuual encampment and the visit of Sergeant-Major Coleman to the district, new life appears to have been infused into volunteering matters. A "XonComsClab .ml Mutual Instruction Class" was formed at a meeting of the non-com-missioned utticeis of the Riglan Mounted Rifles held in Raglan last week, and bimonthly drills are to bo held at To Mata. Most of the local men are in favour of joining the trek camp in June, when the five squadrons constituting No. 2 Waikato Regiment will all be under canvas. During the week there has been a large assemblage of Maoris at Te Kopua to attend the tangi in connection with the death of Mrs Hera Parekawa, which occurred at Mangere. the bcdy having been brought here for the celebration of the customary rites. The deceased held a large interest in the Te Akau Estate and Rakaunui native lands. Inspector Mulgan conducted the standard examinations at the public schools throughout the district during the past week. The "passes" were satisfactory and creditable to the teachers in each case. At Raglan there was but one failure and only two at Te Mata. The latter has the largest roll of the local schools. A conference was to have taken place here on Monday last between delegates from the Raglan County Council, and representatives of the newly-formed Kawhia County, with a view to defining the northern boundary of the latter county, but had to be postponed owing to Mr E. W. Buckeridge, who was to represent Kawhia, being unable to attend. The Chairman of the Raglan County Council (Councillor Hewett), and councillors Bankart and Johnstone were present, but of course nothing cor'd be done in Mr Bnckeridge's absence. The entries for the recently constituted Raglan and Kawhia Agricultural and Pastoral Association's first show closed on Saturday last, and are quite up to expectations, except, perhaps, in sheep, pigs and cattle, though the latter will be better represented than was the case last year, when the show was held under the auspices of tte Farmers' Club. All the arrangements are now in a forward condition, and if the weather is fine there is sure to be a big muster of people, including a good few visitors from Waikato and elsewhere.
