HUNTLY

From Our Own Correspondent. Constable Kock spent some days last week inspecting the sheep-shearers' quarters throughout the district, and found, generally speaking, that everything was satisfactory and a vast improvement on last year. The friends of 31 r Dorricott who was seriously burnt with powder in the " Extended " mine some weeks ago, will be pleased to learn that Ke is progressing favourably. His face and head are almost healed, and he is slowly regaining the use of his arm. A few days ago Mr Thos. Muir, the local blacksmith, had the misfortune to severely burn his right hand with boiling pitch. The accident happened while he was engaged repairing the punt that was lately brought from Tuakau. As the hand was burnt nearly to the bone, it will be some weeks before Mr Moir will be able to resume work. Much sympathy is felt for him in his trouble. It is an open secret that a valuable and extensive seam of coal has been found in the limestone hills at Pukemiro some 8 or 9 miles from Huntly. I have it on good authority that the coal contains a good percentage of gas aud makes excellent steam coal. There are three companies who have obtained land, and all, I believe, intend commencing operations shortly. The 'laupiri Coal Company have secured a large tract of ground, and it is thought that they will be the first to have the coal in the market. .Sir A. J. Cadman, is at the bead of another syndicate being formed. Some of the material for their plant has already been secured. The third mine is to be worked in connection with the Waihi Gold Mining Company. My informant told me that the coal has been thoroughly tested by three leading experts, and also by a prominent engineer, who tried several sacks of it. The verdict of all was that "Pukemiro" was equal to the best and second to none. The coal can be worked to greater advantage than the

Taupiri " because of the solid root' overhead. It cau also be worked with a " drive," doing away with the expensive " skatt."
