HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

At tho usual monthly meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council held in the Couucil Chambers on Tuesday evening, there were present; His Worship the Mayor (Mr Dey) in the chair, and Crs. Davey, Bettley, Jones. Salmon, Sandes, ri Qualtrongh md tSliide. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, Works CoiiMiTTEß,—On the motion of Cr. Jones the name of Cr. Bettley was added to the Works Committee. Correct Survbw.-A letter was received from the engineer, Mr T. G. Saudes, drawing the attention of the Council to the wane of any deficed survey points in the Borougn, and the difficulty in.consequence of making any correct survey?. He stated that in all other townships in Waikato fixed points had beon put down by the( lOvernmen!,, thereby facilitating the fixing of boundaries of allotments.—The Mayor propose! that this matter be left for the Works Committee to report on at next meetiug.— Seconded by Cr. Davey and carried. The School and Traffic Bridge A letter was read from Hon. A. J. Cadman stating that a grant of £'2-50 for the School Bridge and £4OO for tho Traffic Bridge had been obtained, and he hoped the Council would be able to undertake the work without borrowing. The Minister of Lands wrote as follows:—In reply to your telegram of the 30th ult., in which you inquired when the vote for the Hamilton Bridge and Gibbon's Creek Bridge will be available, I have to request that you will state what is the estimated cost of each of these; works and what sums the Borough purposes to contribute towards them respectively. The usual course is for local bodies to have plans and specifications made for approval of the Chief Surveyor of the district.—The engineer said that to make a good job of the traffic bridge and have concrete abutments £SOO would require to be spent,— The Mayor moved that information be given to the Government that the Council intend to spend £4OO on the'traffic bridge and £250 or the school bridge in addition to the grants stated.—Seconded by Cr. Jones andcarried.—Cr. Sandes moved that the clerk be instructed to write to the Chairman of the Kirikiriroaßoad Board pointing out the state tint matters are in at the present moment with regard to the school bridge, and asking him to call a special meeting to consider the matter. This was seconded by the Mayor and carried.—Cr. Davey proposed that plans and specifications be prepared and forwarded to the Government on an estimate of £BOO, aud that a meeting be held next Tuesday night to consider the question. The motion was seconded by Cr. Slade and carried. Treeh.—Mr Buxton wrote asking for permission to cut down the two trees growing in front of the Central flotelj Hamilton East. One, a chestnut, llad been completely destroyed by. the late fire, and the other is much damaged. It hides the view of the Hotel, blocks the light, and creates dampness,/ He".was willing to cut down the trees, extract the stumps and leave the footpath in proper< order at his own expense—Cr. Jones proposed that the. request be acceded to.—Ct'. Sandes said that people had gone to a good deal of trouble in planting these trees. They were an ornament to the town, and he did not think it right to allow them to be cut down.—Cr. Bettley thought that in time these trees would become a nuisance.— Salmou moved an amendment that Mr Buxton be allowed to cut down the chestnut, and that the Foreman of Works trim the other one.—Cr. Jones withdrew his proposition in favour of the amendment, which was seconded by Cr. Davey and carried. Grazing.—Mr Dellicar wrote asking to be allowed to graze a couple of cows in the Council Chambers paddock.—Letter received. Verandah.—Mr Castleton asked for permission to erect a verandah in Vic-toria-street.—The Mayor said he had given the permission required, and his action was confirmed. Work's Report.—ln his report the Foreman of Works recommended that No. 1. Bridge should be repaired, and that the fuizeon Hillsboro'Terrace, from the baths up to Webb's, should be cleared.—On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr, Salmon, it was left for the Works Committee to report on., Furze.—Cr. Sandes said he had noticed that furze was making great headway on several properties near the Lake.—The Clerk was instructed to issue notices to those who had property where furze was growing. Pound Report.-The poundkeeper's report was received, Accounts—The following accounts were passed for payment:—T. W, Maunder, £4 4s 3d ; R. Waiter £4 17s; J. Wright, 8s; J. kidler, 8s 6d j G. Mayes, £2 2s; J. Winter, £2 ss; Geo. Pearson, 6s; audit, £1 13s 4d ; W, Andrew. 18s; Devitt, £3 ss; Champtaloup and Cooper, £1 2s 9d; total, £2l 9s lOd, leaving a debit balance of £253. Annual Tenders.—The annual tenders for carting, gravelling, dog collars, aud lamps were ordered"to be called as usual. " Baths.—Cr. Jones said he had paid a visit to the Hamilton Baths and had noticed that Mr Hinton, the caretaker, had done a lot of work there, and he proposed that Mr Hinton be allowed 10s lor his services.—Seconded by Cr. Sandes and carried. Lot 476.—Mr Frear complained that <nttlf! and horses broke through'from L'it 170 into his place, and he asked the 0 uncil to make the fence secure.—lb was resolved that the fencing be done. Library Conckrt.—The caretaker of the library sent a statement of accounts, which showed a balance of £3 13s 6d from the late concert.

Jubilee Garden.—The Mayor said that the garden was a disgrace to the town, and ho thought that a man should he employed to tidy it up.—Cr. Jones proposed, and Cr. Salmon seconded, that the Foreman of Wmks be allowed to employ a man to clear the garden. This was all the business,
