DISIRICT OF WAIKATO HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the above Board was held in the Hamilton Borough Council Chambers, at 11 a.m. .yesterday. There were present: Messrs A. Primrose (chairman), H.Kusabs, A. Smith, J, Mei ? ulrk » W. Jones, W. P. Chepmell, N. I. f Hunt. Ed. Allen, S. T. Seddon, and G. E. Clark. Barker.--Constable Wild, Te Aroha, wrote applying for relief for a family Darned Barker, residing at Te Aroha, and who are in straitened circumstances. The father James Barker, who is 69 years of age, has been suffering from low fever for some week?, and he has three sons the eldest 14 years, who has work on the railway for a few months at 15s a week. —Mr Gavin the member for the district reported that the case was one that required immediate relief of some sort. — The Chairman granted temporary relief to the extent of ss'a week, and this on the motion of Mr Chepmell was ordered to be continued. Green.-Mrs Green, widow of the late Thomas Green, who lost his life in the fire at the Royal Hotel, in July last, applied for relief for her family which she is unable to support.—On the motion of Mr Jones relief to the extent of 5s a week was granted. McKenzie. - The Secretary of the Auckland Board reported that Helen McKenzie, left the Costley Home for her stepfather's house on October Bth, and he enclosed the account for her four weeks' maintenance, Reports —ln his monthly report the secretary stated that there were 25 recipients of charitable aid and 18 male inmates in the refuge, two paying for their maintenance at the rate of 7s a week and two contributing their pensions of 6d per diem towards their support. Finance; To Bank credit balance, £540 10s 7d; subsidy due by Government, £13819s 6d • contributions due by local bodies, £242 Is Id; £ for £ subsidy on same, £242 Is Id; hospital fees receivable, about. £100; endowment rents, about £ls; total, £1278 12s 3d; less accounts parsed for payment, £lB5 10s sd; leaving an available balance of £1093 IsilOd. The expenditure for the month includes salaries and wages £66 10s 6d; charitable aid, £2O 6s; chloroformist, £4 4«,; drugs, £ll 17s 7d; fitting new battery, £lolss 3d; Sotorua Sanatorium, £8 8s; Auckland Maternity Ward, £2 2s; legal expenses, £2 16s 2d; the balance, £SB 13s Id, being ordinary expenditure. ( During the month £556 12s 2d was received and paid into the bank, made up as follows, viz. : Government subsidy, £363 16s Sd; Waikato County, £l3B 19s 6d; hospital fees, £33 16s. Bernard Ford was on the recommendation of Mr Gavin admitted to the refuge on 26th ult, W. Lawlor was admitted to the refuse on the Ist inst., and has since been removed to the hospital suffering from an ulcerated leg. Christopher Trayner, left the refuse on the Ist inst„ having obtained employment. The House . Committee accepted an offer from Mr N. Ferguson, of the Hamilton Hotel Stables, for conveyance of patients to or from the hospital at the following rates, viz. : flingle patient, 2s; two or more, ls6d «ach ; ambulance, ss. The report was received and 1 adopted.—The dootor's ,n»onthr? report was read and received. NtJRSES.-Dr Kenny reported that Miss Maudeno's health was such that it was imperative she should give up nursing at once and he recommended that Miss Deakin, of Riverhead, the second on the list of applicants, receive the appointment. —Mr Seddon moved that Miss Deakin be appointed as probationer vice Miss Mandeno.—Seconded by Mr Ed. Allen—Mr Jones moved that Miss Elliott, the local applicant, be appointed. The Board had acted on the doctor's recommendation in appointing Miss Mandeno and she had proved unsuitable. He thought the Board should now act for themselves.-Mr McGuirk seconded the amendment as he was in favour of appointing nurses from withm the district when possible.—The amendment for the appointment of Miss Elliott was then put and lout, the voting being :—For: Messrs Jones, McGuirk, and Smith. Against: Messrs Primrose, Seddon, Kusabs, Allen, Clark, Hunt and Chepmell,—The motion for Miss Deakin's appointment was then put and carried unanimously. Holidays. Dr. Kenny applied, owing to the difficulty and expense of getting a suitable locum tenens, that he should be allowed to forego his holiday this year, and add it to his holiday next year making six weeks then. During the past eight years he had only had a month's holiday. He knew the Board could not pledge any futur*? Board, but the doctor asked that the Board should favourably recommend his application to the incoming Board. Should the Board be unable to grant the above request he asked that he be allowed to forego this year's holiday and draw the salary which would be paid to his locum tenens. —Mr Chepmell said there was no necessity to made any recommendation to the incoming Board, as the Board was continuous, aud the action of this Board was binding on future Boards, but who of course could negative any resolution of previous Boards. He moved that in consideration of Dr. Kenny foregoing his holiday this year he be granted a holiday of six weeks next year.-Seconded by Mr Seddon and ! v carried unanimously.-Ifc was decided that the Board could not in any way grant the latter request in the letter. Relief.—The usual relief, with the addition of Boker and Mrs Green, was ordered to he continued until next meet* in?.

Next Meeting.—The next meeting being a statutory ODe will be held on 15th Wednesday, in December, viz. sth. The Past Year—This being the last meeting of the present Board, the Chairman briefly referred to the wprk at the Hospital during the past year. .There jjad been 21S patients admitted aaagainst

192 in 1893, an increase of 26. The deaths had been 17, but of these 7 had no chance of recovery when received. At the present date there were 18 patients iti the institution. During the year thirty five major surgical operations had been peiformed. Before the meeting dispersed the Chairman thanked the Board for the kiud treatment he had received at their hands during his past terms,
