GREAT SIORM AT DUNEDIN.
(by telkgraph-press association). Donedin, Saturday. One of the severest tropical downpours of rain and hail that has ever been experienced,came on this afternoon. At five o'clock the clouds gathered swiftly, and as it became as dark almost as night, they began to circle as if the town were the centre of a syclone.- Presently they discharged their contents, rain and hail falling almost in a' body. The hailstones were remarkably large and tbe lightning vivid. The streets were flooded in a few seconds, and as tr* downpour continued,- shops were flooded, and thousands of pounds worth of damage was done. In Maclaggan and, .Rattray streets, which : are, the outlets for the discharge from the hills, .empty tanks could be seen floating down the 'streets, The channels in some streets were torn up. Cellars in Rattraystreet were flooded, as were also probably many ■'warehouses in Bond and Lower High streets. In street, Braithwaite's suffered severely. In' George-street, the loss of many shopkeepers is very, heavy. Messrs Jyfe and dimming.' had fully £SOO worth of goods damaged, a severe blow following on Mr Fyfe's loss of his wife in the Wairarapa. A. and T, 'City Boot Palace, and ethers also suffered.
