PICKING WOOL.
As the shearing season is now appoaching the following hint may be useful: —ln many woolsheds practice, is made, in order that the grower may enjoy the full benefit of the jllb trade allowance for tare, of stuffing any portion of the woolpacks •which may have to be cut off by the •jpressers into the bale which is being packed. It frequently occurs that £aps or lids of the woolpacks, or the sides of the packs, are cut in order io facilitate the work of turning out ft neat bale of wool, but it is just as well that growers should understand ihatthe placing of these remnants i)£the packs inside the bales gives rise to much loss and annoyance to siose by whom the wool is subsequently handled.. For one thing, sJaims are constantly being made on jihe buying houses for so many jpounds of sacking found in such .and such a purchase when the parcel was opened up in the factory, the discovery of such remnants being at 4)nce regarded by .many manufactures, in distant countries as an attempt to swindle. Such claims have to be met in order to prevent the loss of .orders, but buyers take care to 3,void lots on which, from any cause, ■they have had to pay claims in the g)ast. It will moreover be readily understood that the fibres from gagged pieces of the wool pack cause injury to the wool. Once the loose /jbres of jute become intermingled with the wool, they cannot be removed, and in the manufactured material they show up clearly, not unnaturally being regarded as a blemish. Such pieces are usually by the merchants, who either returns them or claims from ihe manufacturer; so that carelessaaees in this connection in the wooljhed on the station leads to a long #bain of mischief.
