DR. BARNARDO'S HOMES.

As many; of,our readers contribute towards the noble work carried; on; by Dr. Thos: J. .Barnardo, >Lbnclori, sonie particulars of ; his operations : from data recently received will be of interest. Up to the present time 24,000 boys and girls have beeu.admitted' to the homes. When it is considered,that these have been removed from the life of the streets, from actual destitution, or from positions of the gravest' danger, and after being taught trades ol' fitted for domestic service large numbers have entered upon useful and honourable careers, the value of such a noble work must be apparent, These children have, moreover, been '.■ brought under the powerful influence of Christian instruction and example, and ■the moral'effect cannot be otherwise than beneficial to the whole community, At the present time nearly 5000 orphans or destitute children are being cared for. These are lodged in 48 distinct institutions in various parts of Britain 'and three in Canada, the,varied and practical . character of which may be gathered from , ' the following, which. are a few of the departments, viz, • Babies' Castle' Nur- • scry Home for very little boys, Village Home,for girls, Jubilee Hospital for waif children, Shoeblack.' Brigade, Woodchopping Brigade, Farm School, Blind ; and Deaf Mute Branch, Branch for Cripples, and Deformed Children, Emigration Depot, &c. The gross,daily ex- • penses are never less than £'2so, at least £l5O being required to provide food alone for one day, When it is /remembered that there are no endowments, and that the whole work is absolutely dependent on the freewill offerings of the benevolent, , the foregoing facts appeal very strongly for sympathy and; help. To further the, good work and facilitate re--Imittapces from friends- in this district, i Dr. Barnardo has' accredited Mr F. J, : , Brocks, of Cambridge, as his agent to ' receive contributions. All moneys forwarded to him, or to the Yen, Archdeacon Willis, will be duly acknowledged by Dr. Barnardo, ;
