KIHIKIHI.

School ExAmNATiON.-Inspector Goodwiu conducted the annual standard examination at the Kihikihi school on Monday and Tuesday; last. There, was a large percentage of the pupils examined, most of whom' passed; a result whieh,:cont?idering theabsence of the head-teacher for several months, also this numerous changes in the staff,-thanks <o -the Auckland Board,—must be acknowledged to be most creditable to the school in general. The usual week's holiday was commerced on' Thursday, and no doubt both pupils and teachers will appreciate a well earned recreation. ' Coolgardie.- The Coolirardie fever has fairly caught on here, two residents of our district, Messrs; Sullivan, having Jtflrted lor the new "El Dorado" some v little time ago; and some of our oldest settlers, even, are . slightly affected and are half inclined to pack up and try their luck oncp more, having still a lively recollection of their happy, experiences on the Australian gold diggings; V "■ RABBIT Day.—Wednesday last t>roved to 'be quite a revival in the rabbit'skin trade with the Govefnaient. lam not aware of the number of skins bought or what amount was paid for the same, but judging from the number of natives from all parts and' the business doing in the .township it must have been almost, if not equal; .to our best "rabbit days" of months ago. ;»V . Polo.—l am glad to see that Et 'meeting of the polo club here is called for the 27th inst./ Everyone will be pleased to hear that there is a probability of the game, and I might say the club also, being revived here. I hear that a ne ; w secretary has been appointed, all that is wanted is a little more " go" and ! enthusiasm, particularly in the practices, which are so necessary to keep any club. alive and healthy. It has in the. past been amistoken idea with Kihikihi clubs, that unless a match is being played or arranged for, that it wasnot worth while practicing or even attending the meetings. Cricket Club -A cricket club has been ' lately started here',. thanks 'to the trouble and interest taken by Mr J. Steel in the matter, who was the promoter. A well attended meeting was held a week or so ago and a large, number of members \ have expressed their intention of joining. The usual number of club officers, captain, secretary, - committee, ; etc., were elected, , as well as a president and some half dozen or- more of vice-presidents. This is a good start for the new club and if only the same spirit of "go aheadedness" (if I may use the term) be shown in ths actual game the Kihikihi Cricket Club will .be heard of again, and to their credity Larrikins —Kihikihi ; is generally not much cursed with the larrikin element going around, but ■it has been noticed, of late that a most objectionable form of the same has been becoming somewhat prominent. I mean the use of obscene, and objectionable language which may be heard at times on the main street at night, also issuing from beneath store and hotel verandahs ;in anything: but subdued tones of voice. I mention this so that a word in time may have a good effect., ut
