u Sydney, December 8, ; The Government deciding to take Mr : Lee's motion, with reference to Mr ' Barton holding a brief from Mri Proudfoot in his action against the, jßailway Commissioners, in the ordh nary way, Mr .Lee sought to gain his end by moving the adjournment of ;the House, last night, in order to dis- : mm the matter. A long debate followed, resulting in the defeat ofthe Government by 69 to4B.
The Premier said the attack was not. upon Mr Barton' but upon the 06% ', vernment, and declared he was quite prepared to abide by the result. The situation will be considered in Cabinet' to-day (| and the' Premier will probably - ' mieet the House' this afternoon' with the Government's intentions. ,- ; ■., '..'.
4fter the: House adjourned, Mr Reid, Leader of the Opposition, exv pressed the opinion that the Govern-' merit would remain ; in office nntil the. elestors repeated last night's dose. Mr McMillan was also interviewed, and he thought the best course the Go* vernment could pursue was to pass the estimates and go to the country as | soon'as the electoral machinery could J be put in order.,. The debate itself was rather ted ions and ended unexpectedly. i . "The Sydney Morning Herald 'con*-.; aiders the decision of the House show*, that Mr Barton's: action, admits' oil argument, but the disapprobation ■■ should ihave involved the downfall of - f the Ministry.' It attributes the result' more to the action of the Government i in baulking, the discussion on Mr Lee's motion. ~;•,!
: The Daily Telegraph says when Mr Lee','by a sort of coup d'etat, placed ' himself / firmly and inextricably in.". command of the Op.pasition he scored ani admitted suacess, but he proved,; dismally unequal to the responsibility, ■' and plunged the country into political ;' chaos unprecedented in the history of' the colony, and the way out is impose sible at the : present time to A vote of want-of-confidence, if moved; immediately,; /would shbV'j whether the real object of the House ' was .to vindicate, the principle or precipitate the crisis.. . ; ■■■■■>
