GENERAL ELECTIONS.

THBexciteinent which has been agitating the colony for. the <ps fewfweeka reached the culmination point on Tuesday last, the ; polling day for the election of representatives for the General Assembly, ;t ' ; ; • In general with other parts ofthe colony considerable interest was manifested locally and large numbers of voters excercisedtheir privilege, the ladies being especially prominent. Of the candidates for Waipa and Waikato'the former returned »local, man Mr F. WYLang by a majority little short -'of- one thousand,., against Mr G. L. Peacocke the nominee of the Premier and the Liberal Association; in the latter constituency Mr Coates, the local candidate, suffered a very narrow defeat by only 76 votes from Hon. A. J, Udman, Minister for Justice and_ Mines. From a synopsis of the voting'it can easily be gathered that the present government does hot meet with the support of the agricultural communities, at. least in these electorates. The large majority for Mr Lang for Waipa, which is almost entirely an agricultural district clearly proves this, a,.c .it is ; also borne outinWaikatoforbad it not been for the mining vote -at'Huntly, Kimihia, and Te Aroha Mr Cadmaas position with regard to Mr Coates would have been reversed. ' , 'i : "*u Throughout the colony, however, the verdict has been in favour of the present Government, a ticking of the candidates returned showing the position of parties to be Ministerialists, 50; Independent, '4. ■ In the [next Par lament' many faces that have been familiar, tor years will be missed, Messrs W. Rolleston, S McKenzie, G. F. Richardson, Larnach, Fisher, Fish, W. F. Buckland, T. Thompson being among the defeated ones. .

Jackson, for Waipa and Waikato respectively, for the very complete arrangements they had made for having the returns in, all being known by 11 p.m., with the exception of Tokaanu, and this was known shortly after .9 a.m. yesterday. We are greatly indebted to these gentlemen for the information, so kindly placed at our disposal, and also to Mr Logie and his staff Jor the excellent manner in which we, as well as the general public, were served at the telegraph office. , ; During the evening a large crowd gathered in front of The Waikato Times Buildings, and the various results ware eagerly waited for. The returns as soon as received were shown on two transparencies in our front windows, and the various candidates, were frequently cheered. ~;.'. .. (BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Wellington; Last Night. Sir Robert Stout in an interview to-day said his prediction had bean verified that the women would support t'he democracy and uphold the national education and where the Direct Veto had been made an issue and won, it had been by the influence of the women. ; More than half the Liberals in the new Parliament are ■ irect vetoists, and this frees tho party from tho Mint of tho licfuor riht? and the Government must fall in line accordingly. Personally he regrets the defeat of several old members. He makes the Liberal party 52,-of whom 22 are in favour of the Liquor Bill, and 30 of the Direct Veto, and the Opposition 18 of whom gome are, for the veto.: The liquor party »re down cast and discomfltted. , (BY TELEGRAPH-OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Auckland. Last Night.

The Star-: to-nighVcommenting on the election, says: The elections throughout the colony resulted in a victory for the Government. The Opposition leaders have been swept away, and the returns, if 'all'the Independents and doubtfuls 'are credited to the Opposition, give a total of 18 members of that party, as against 52 Liberals, of whom 41 may be classed as 'supporters of the leadership 6f MrSeddon, and 11 who might' prefer the: leadership of Sir Robeit Stout, although the majority of these 5 would support; tha Government against any proposal rfor a coalition with the Opposition. Every Minister has succeeded in securing re-election, while the disasters ambng the 'first-rank of the Opposition are "astonishing. n The roost remarkable fact about the election is: the strength of the Government in the country districts generally. Throughout the South Island, wherever the people have ,been brought in contact with land monopoly, they appreciate the effort of the Ministry tosecure for the people, by.fair measures their inheritance in the lands of the colony, That was the question abDve all others that determined the results of the present elections. Amongthe contending cries' of one sort arid another'the' people' never forgot that the Ministry had courageously grappled with''monopoly, and had en-, dnavoured' honestly' to ; find a solution of some of'the most difficult problems for the welfare of the people. The advocates of direct veto by a bare majority, are estimated at 24 in a House of 70. It is probable therefore that no chacgewill,be.niacSein

the Ipresent Alcoholic \ Sale Act until it has stood the test of three years' trial, The change from the management of the railways by the Ootrimiesionento a system under which the Ministry will have a voice in the control, maynow.be regarded as a foregone'conclusion. The,position of the Ministry under the Prem'iershipbf!Mr Seddon is wholly unassailable. 'The Government have obtained from the country such an endowment of their past administration that nothing but wholesale treachery could deprive Ministers of the opportunity for further developing their policy.
