POLITICAL ADDRESSES.

■;, - liVlii-!';, -M;,f MR COATES AT HAMILTON. : Last evening Mr I; Coates,' one of the candidates for the Waikato electorate; adi dressed a meeting of the'electors of the district in the Oddfellows' Hall, Hamilton' East. There was a large attecdance, oyer 200 being present, including several ladies. Mr Coates ascended the platform punctually at 8 o'clock! amid applause. Mr A. Furze moved that Mr A'. Primrose, chairman or the Waikato County Council, take the chiir, This was carried by acclamation. Mr Primrose, on taking the chair, said it was his pleasing duty to introduce Mr Coates to the electors of Waikato as a candidate I 'to represent them in the next Parliament of New Zealand. He was sure ; there was no need to introduce hun to a Hamilton audience, as Mr Coates had been closely associated with Hamilton and! the district' for over a quarter of a century, and his autions during that time; would speak 1 for themMves, 1 without any recommendation on his part. Mr Primrose then called on Mr Coates to address the meeting, ' '■ : Oq rising to speak Mr Coates ww greeted with great applause. He said he Stood as a candidate for their 'suffrages for the Waikab electorate, but before asking them to record their votes 1 in his l favour, it was only right Chat they should know his views on the present political aspect. He congratulated the ladies oil having at last got the franchise, after a. long fisrht. All would agree with him that Sir John Hall deserved the. thanks of the community for his action on this subject, It was his opinion that had the Government party had their own way the ladies would not now have the franchise (applause.) Mr Coates then spoke ou .the incidence of taxation, and; he expressed himself in favour of giving the Land and Income Tax a fair trial, as .any and eve'ry change in direct taxation, he held, was bad, inasmuch as it was liable to frighten , away that fickle article capital, and the change.fro.ir the Property Tax to the Land and Income Tax had, he doubted not, driven away a large amouiat of capital from the colony. They all would agree with him that they would get along very badly without it; It ' therefore behoved the people of New Zealand to see that the laws are so made as to attract*rather than repel, and'to'en.; courge capital as much as possible! / Mr Coates did . not agree with 1 the; graduated tax-(applause)- maintaining that if a graduated tax'is, levied' on land, it ought 'in all' fairness .to : be levied on large incomes and' other forms of investments, levying on. land only loeirty unfair to the country districts. Instancing the Woodlaucls Estate, he asked who had got the benefit of the large amount of money, that, had, been, 'spent on that property in dmining, clearing, fencing, etc ? He thought he could, 'say it was not the owners, as they had. lost a large account of but had they not taken up the land it; would now most f probably ; be lying in'aVstate 'of; torture, The workingman andjhe'public' at large were the r peojf)le wtio had; benefitted ;bphe ; . expenditure . on this, .property.: (Applause). ; , He, ,aske,d what 'wouldHamiltbh,.
