EXPERIMENTS WITH SEED POTATOES.
The following results of trials.at the experimental grounds. Whangarei, with seed potatoes are published by a contemporary. The potatoes were imported by the Department of Agriculture in October, 1892. The trials were with six varieties, as follows No. 1: Magnum Bonum, five plots, 14lb to each, planted October 31, 1892; lifted in March, as were the whole of the lots, excepting No, 6 No manure gave 1121b of tubers; guano, 1251b; bonedust, 1351b; potato mauurc, 1631b; kaiuit, 1091b.
No. 2 : Bruce, five plots, 131b to each, planted November 2. No manure gave 1141b tubers; guano, 1241b ; bonedust, 1421b; potato manure, 2031b ; kainit, llllb,
No. 3 : Main crop kidney, five plots, 141b to each, planted November 9. No manure gave 811b; guano, 1161b; bonedust, 1271b; potato manure, 1541b; kainit, 1131b.
No. 41 Imperator, five plots, 13Jlb to each, planted November 16, No manure gave 641b tubers; guauo, 1061b; bonedust, 1141b; potato manure, 1561b; kainit, 721b.
No. 5: Sutton's Early Regent, five plots, 4tb to each, planted November 5. No manure gave 221b tubers; guano, 321b; bonedust, 461b ; potato manure, 501b; kainit. No. 6 : Sutton's Abundance, five plots, 2|lb to each, planted November 5. No manure gave 91b tubers; guano, 181b ; bonedust, 221b; potato mature, 241b; kainit, 101b. The total weight of sets was 3051b, while the aggregate weight of produce was 27141b. The soil was mostly good volcanic. In each case the manure applied was at the rate of about onwt to the acre. Heavy rains followed immediately after Nos. 3 and 4 were planted, causing thb soil to got sodden. The seed of Nos, 5 and 6 was considerably bruised on arrival, In every instance, as will be seen by the above report, potato manure gave tho best returns of tubers, bonedust coming next, while kaiuit appeared to be of no use at all. 1
