ROTORUA.

Pkksu.vtation.—A present ition was made to Constable Caliill on Tuesd iy night on the eve of his d"partur,-!. A number of gentlemen assembled for the purposrj in the Palace Hotel. Mr ,T. 1C Taylor, J. P.. occupied the chair and in a neat speech made the present ition and referred to the loss the district was about to sustain by the iransferof Constable T. Caliill to Hamilton, but Uotorua's loss wouU he Constable Cahill's gain. The main duty of a policeman, the chairman remarked, w.is to prevent crime and in that respect our esteemed Const ible had been exceedingly successful. Mr Taylov expressed the pleasure he had in presenting- Constable Caliill, on behalt of the inhabitants, with a g.'ld albert and pendant, and a gold neck-

let for Mrs Cahill. "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" was then sung by the company. Constible Cahill, in replying, expressed his thanks for the honour the people had conferred upon him in giving him such a splendid gift, which he would carry about with him with kind recollections of his Rotorua friends. From his experience as a policeman he could not wish to be located amongst a better lot of citizens than those of Kot:rua, who wore law-abiding, and he was pleased t> be able to state that during his stay there had been no serious crimes. The articles of presentation were supplied by Mr Sargent, Cambridge, and were selected by Mr W. T. Can , , who is to be complimented mi his choice, a.s the articles weiv; much admired. The pendant, a Maltese cr-iss. h.'u the following inscription neatly engr.ived :—" Presented to Constable T. Cahill, by the inhabit Hits of Rot u'ua, :n a token of respect and esleem o'i the decision of his departure. Rot u-.i.-i, September, W.YI. Constable and Mrs Cahill and family took their departure on Wednesday, via Oxford, enroute for If-iinilton, and had to do a considerable amount of handshaking as the coach passed through the township.
