PROPOSED SCHOOL FOR CENTRAL NEWCASTLE.

TO THIS EDITOR. SIK, —For some considerable time past people's minds in this pai t of the district liavu been much occupied in considering as to where the most suitable ]) jsitiun for a school site could be found «.■ <|ui-ilis-taut, between Whatawhata and Xgaruawahia. A school has been held as a temporary expedient for the pist year in a private building at .Stone's c mier, and presided over by a commissioner (Mr Little), a very punstaUing, goo 1 man for that position. It is uudeistiod the Hoani of hduoa'ioii have decided to erect a new school in the district, but the particular locality has n',t been decided on, though the matter has been under discussion iur a long time. One or two pa'ties interested in having the school at Stone's corner seemed sufficient laud for a site and ollered it to the Board free of cost, at the same time advocating it to be the most suitable in the district. The settlers - in the Te lvowhai part of tl.e distiiet having heard of this, resented it as a piece of assumption, as they considered that Stone's corner was altogether at one end of the district, and it has resulted in the Te Kowha: people ollVring a free site to the Hoard at Corbelt's L'orm r. It is now alleged that all the private influence that each party can bring to bear on the" Hoard of Education Ins been exercised in turn in favour of their respective sites, l'hough this unsatisfactory state of mattirs has been lingering on, and while the Board of Education declined to fix on any site, there :s another large section of settlers that do not think that either of the two sites mentioned is suitable or central. The correctness of this opinion was fully demonstrated at a meeting of settlers called some mouths ajo by Messrs Reynolds and Co. to select a" central site for the creamery. There was a large meeting, every part of the district being represented, particularly Te. Kowhia and Stone's Cumer ; and, after having considered Lhc merits and demerits of t.'ie various sites advocated, it was finally decided that the site where the creamery now stands (near Jlagncr's 'Joiner) was the most suitable and central.- This was ou account of it being- on the main trunk road, and the district oil both, .side.'i of this road being settled on by people with families, and it is maintained that .he same line of reasoning is good in favour of a school sight. Having 'he above in view a number of settlers met a few days ago near the new creamery to consider a third site, now offered free by Mr Frank Klclock. The meeting- considered that this site is in a very desirable position. It is a corner section, at an angle of four roads, and about eight chain- from file creamery, in the Ngaruawxhia direction. I see that the Board of Education have called a meeting of householders, to lie held at the school, at Stone's corner, oil Saturday next, at -I p m., to elect a school commitue. There is nothiug said in tlio notice about the school site, bur that will be the burning question. Jt ij to be liojim.l that tin undue influence will be illmvid to play any part in the m-lection Jt a site thai would not. be a Ivan igeotis ■'* the dis'ri'-t a.- a whole. — Y'ours. Parent, September -'-iili. 1 Si' 2.
