A quarter-acre allotment on the Hamilton-road, Cambridge, will be offered hy auction at Mr McNicol's ns-ial monthly sale at Cambridge <ui Friday, October 7th. The allotment is one of the best situated in the town as a residential site, being in a nice neighbourhood, and within a few minutes' walk of the business part of the town. Written tenders will be received by the Trustees of the Hamilton Rifle Range Reserve, up to Saturday next for the lease for 21 years of three allotments, near Frankton, emit lining respectively 40, 40, and 50 acres. A. preliminary meeting of the Cambridge Cricket Club was held on Wednesday evening, when the affairs of the club were examined and the result proved very satisfactory. Last year the club had a debit balance of about £(i, but we are pleased to learn that has been wiped out and now the :lub is free from debt. A general meeting will shortly be called to arrange for the forthcoming season. We learn that a goodly number of players who reside at some little distance from Cambridge intend joining the club, and on the whole there is a very fair prospect of Cambridge being able to put a strong team in the He'd, this is very gratifying for the Cantabs have certainly been retrograding lately in sporting matters. The vigilance of the Opposition during the passing of the Estimates unearthed a piece of disgraceful jobbery on the part of the Government. The member for Inangahua, Mr R. Reeves, is a thick-and-thin Government supporter, and had been appointed a member of the West port Harbour BoarJ. Mr Reeves lives at Nelson, 160 miles from Westport, so that each trip of his to a meeting of the Board costs the colony £15 10s, besides £18 for travelling expenses. This, beyond doubt, is the record-breaking piece of jobbery of the day; and if it doesn't open the eyes of the thoughtful taxpayer to the cruel joke that is being played upon him by a Government professing to be guided hy economy in its administrative actions, why nothing under heaven can do so. Dick Reeves, as everyone knows, is not a particularly brilliant or even intelligent specimen of his class, and it would, therefore be a libel on Westport to say that there is no one nearer than Nelson qualified to transact the business of the Harbour Board. It furnishos another instance of the length to which our Liberal Government are prepared to go in order to lengthen their Ministerial power. It is well that the electors should make a mental note af such revolutions as this in view of the platform utterances of itinerant MinisI ters on questions nf economy and clean administration.—Tuapeka Times.
