Tuk l'ukekura Mutual Improvement Society met in the school on Friday evening, the Rev. Mr Sitiimonds presiding over a goodly sit tendance ot members. There was only time to discuss throe of the subjects that were upon tlio piper foi thin meeting- The first was " Education, and there appeared t > be great diversity of opinion as to the higher education of women being of benefit to the goneral community. The m-xt w'as upon "The Greatest M m in Now Zealand." ft was almost, unanimously agreed that Sir Goorge Grey tilled this position ; but one supporter of the Government, wanted to foist, the present Premier upon the members as the man the colony, but ho found himself solus. The third sulject was " Is marriage a failure?l This question was treated in a serious manner, and the result of the discussion was that "real marriage'' is not a failure, but that marriage de convenance and all like ill-assorted matrimonial arrangements are utter failure?. The I'residenl gave the young people some very good advice as to the folly of flirting, coquetting, " mashing.'' etc., which we trust they will take to heart. The next meeting will be the concluding one of this session and will be devoted to readings and recitations.
