Our horse fair on Saturday, the 27th ult., was well at-t-nded, though the chief of the horses submitted were not the kind in demand, being mostly Composed of hacks, whilst draught horses are greatly needed just now in the district, still despite these drawbacks a h\#;e number changed hands before leaving the yards. There was a good attendance present and bidding was fairly brisk, bit owing to high reserves in many cases placed upon the cattle several lines loft the yards without changing hands, though a pood deal of stock was sold under the hammer. CHRISTCHURCH LIVE STOCK MA Kl'/I'S. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company Liinitod, report under date: (Juristchubch, August 20. — The wot weather preceding the saie was no doubt the cause of so small mi entry of store sheep as that yarded yostcrday, viz., about 1200. The attendance was good. and competition fair y active, resulting in everything changing hands at satisfactory values. A line of 500 crossbred two-tooth wethers, in good condition brought Ib's (id, crossbred owes iu lamb 15s to 18s 9d, crossbred hoggets 12s to 13s, and merino ewes in j lamb 8s 9d to 9s 7d. —A small lot of prime fat lambs elicited keen competition from the trade, and sold at 21s to 22s lid. —I'at Sheep: A moderate supply was penned, including a good many southern consignments. A large proportion of the entry consisted of merino wethers, though the bulk of tlierri were of second-class quality, anil were very difficult to quit at failvalues. Those of really prima quality, however, made prices equal to late rates. I'rime crossbred freezers formed about a third of the supply, and met with a very dull market compared with those of late, those buying for export being careless to operate except at greatly reduced prices, consequently a decided decline in values is to be recorded. Crossbred ewes met failcompetition by the trade, but prices wtre a trifle easier, and crossbreds too light for export suffered a corresponding fall in value t> prime sheep. Best crossbred freezers br -light 17s Del to 20s, heavy-weights to 21s, merino wethers up to 15s 10d.—Fat Cattlo: Beof was in good supply as regards numbers, though that of prime quality was decidedly in the minority, anil commanded keen competition from the trade. Bidding for that of inferior quality was also good, and a very satisfactory sain resulted. Best bullocks brought £8 to £10, ditto cows and hrif.-rs £5 to £8, beef making 18< to 20s per 1001b.—Store. Cattle: The entry was a large one, and contained several good-sized lines of useful young cattle and a number of dry cows. The former attracted considerable attention from graziers, spirited bidding followed, and very satisfactory piices were obtained. Weaners brought 28s to 355, yearlings 37b to 395, three-year-old stecrs £1 ISs to £5 lis, dry cows £2 10.-. to £4 10s, and dairy cows at £4 to £7 sa.
