NORTH ISLAND RAILWAY, The Wellington, Auckland, and Taranaki memhers held a meeting this morning in tho Parliamentary Buildings for the purpose of considering the rival routes of the North Island Trunk Railway. After some discussion and much difference of opinion, a rosolution, moved by Mr Jackson Palmer, to the effect that the meeting requests the Government to set up a committee to enquire and report on the best railway route to connect Auckland with Wellington, was carried by 10 votes tc 2. It was also resolved that a sub-committee be formed consisting of Messrs Shera, Thompson, Duthie. Newman and McGuire, to submit to the Premier the names of uninterosted persons to act as a committee. An effort will be made to get at least one Auckland and one Wellington member on the committee t» consider this vexed question. THE TOTALIS ATOR. Mr Rees' Bill to abolish the totalisator had to be withdrawn from the order paper to-day. The Speaker said that according to a well known Parliamentary custom, a question which was rejected by the House could not be brought up again the same session in practically the game form as when previously dealt with. During the debate yesterday afternoon on the subject of Government advertising, Mr Allen related a curious incident to show the summary manner in which the present Government treat their own officers. He said that whilst the Bruce election was. being contested recently, a nowspaper on the borders of his electorate, and having a little circulation in that district, was refused an advertisement by the Returning Officer for Bruce. The editor wrote to the Premier and put the advertisement in on his authority, and the Returning Officer refused to pay the account. The Returning Officer, said Mr Allen, was shortly afterwards " retired."
