MR GLADSTONE ELECTED

The Liberal cry throughout the Midlothian election was. " Vote for the Grand Old Working Man." The Tory cry was, " Vote for a resident and the Church of Scotland." The latter had the monopoly of the carriages, and they claim a. majority in Edinburgh. It is believed that the working men and tho Irish voted for Colonel Wauchop. The railway line was cut near Clare to prevent a special train conveying voters reaching the placs in time. Precautions had been taken, however to send a detached engine on aliead, and this savcl tho train. The engine was capsized, but those on board escaped unhurt. The Gladstone Liberals won eleven seats to-day. The Liberals gain Argyllshire (Mr Macfarlane). Former members wore re-alected for Renfrew, Altrincham (Cheshire), Otley (Yorkshire), Ilarborougb, and Sunderland. Mr Coningsby Disraeli, Consorvativo was elected for Eddisbury (Cheshire), Mr Whittaker, Home Ruler, for Spen Valley (Yorkshire). The latest returns give the Liberals and Irish members, '26j ; Conserva* tives, 230 ; Unionists, 38. Later. The Daily News, Telegraph and Standard refer to the Midlothian Election as the most striking phenomenon of the election. The Times asserts that Mr GladI stone's thinly veiled hostility to the Kirk combined with Homo Rule accounts for the reduction in his supporters, amounting to a defeat. Th e German and Vienna Press consider that the advent of Mr Gladstone will not affect the peace of Europe. The number of votes polled are, Unionist 1,725,000, Home Rulers and others 1,851,000. The Nationalists have olected 42 members and the Parnellites seven.

Mr Gladstone in addressing the electors thanked thom for chosing him under the circumstances and he laid special stress on the difficulty he had to contend with throughout the election. He hoped that he would be able to strengthen the solid Union of the Empire.

The Liberals gain Woodbridge (R. Evertt), Skipton (Roundell), Falkirk (H. Smith), Middle division of Norfolk (Higgins). The former members have been re-elected for the West division of Derby, Lord Edwari Cavendish (U.), Rotherham, Arthur Ackland (G.L.), Huntingdon, A. H. Barry (C.), Ramsey, Hon. Ailwyn Fellowes (C.), North division of Monmouth, Thos. Prico (G.L.), Westbury, Geo. Fuller (G.L.), Banbury, Sir B. Samuelson, Bt. (G.L.), Honiton, Sir J. H. Kennaway, Bt., (C.), South Tyrone, Thos. W. Russell (U.), Waterford, Rich. Power (N.), Lewes, Sir Hy. Fletcher, Bt., (C.), Stamford, H. J. Oust (C.), Guildford, Hon. W. Brodrick (C.), Saffton Walden, H. Gardner (G.L.), Richmond. Geo. W. Elliott (C.), East Mayo, John Dillon (N.), Brighton (2), Rt, Hon. Sir. W. Marriott (C.), Gerald W. Loder (C.), Eskdale, Robt. Andrew (G.L.), Jarrow, Sir C. M. Palmer, Bt., (G.L.), Bridgwater, Ed. J. The following Nationalists hare been electcd : —Loitli (McDonald), West Wieklow (O'Connor), West Limerick (Austen), South Kildare (Minsh). The following Conservatives have been elected: —Appleby (Savory), Truro (Williams), Medway (Waite), New Forest of Hants (Montague), Mr E. Blake, ex-leader of the Opposition in the Canadian Parliament, has been elected for South Longford, and Mr Williams (Liberal) for Mansfield.
