THE SYLVIA PARK COMPANY.

Wβ hear that Nordenfoldt's list for the season has closed, at 35 Guineas for each mare. It will be safe to allow that at least forty mares are included in 'his list, which tots up to tho very respectable sum of £1400, as one item in the return foi tho proposed Company. This in itselt is nearly 10 per cent, on the price to be paid for the whole stud, i'ifty guineas might just as readily have been charged for the service of Nordenfeldt, and even at this price the applications would have exceeded the limit, Under this head E2OOO would have been the retu'ii, a sum which may fairly be looked forward to next season, from one horse alone. With the exception of tho gentlemen whose name appeared in the prospectus as on the provisonal directory, we do not knnw who are associated with Col. Cane in promoting the company, but we should say that if such good sportsmen as Messrs T. Monin, L. J). Nathan and T. Philson were amongst the number and if they undertook a vigorous personal canvass of Auckland sporting men and merchants, the necessary capital would be more than doubly subscribed. To racing men it is of the first importance that Auckland's supremacy should bo maintained as the seat of tho most valuable and successful breeding establishment in the colony, and to business men this consumption is of little less concern. The Sylvia Park Stud has been one of the interesting show places of the province, and one in which Aucklanders have naturally taken much pridu. All the notables visiting Auckland hate m the past Jtieen taken to see this establishment, and the favourable impression left upon tho minds of theso visitors is frequently come across in the columns of the English and colonial press. So far as the sister colonies aru concerned, this s of frequent occurrence, as horses bred at SyUik Park have for some time past taken prominent positions at all their chief race meetings. We are much pleased to learn that .Mr .1. McNieol takes a lively interest in the successful Moating of the company and wo cannot do better than recommend all Waikato men who lake any interest in the breeding of good stock to give him iheir substantial support, and we might add, those not so immediately interested, namely, our leading business men, who desire to see this end of the colony keep tu the front. It becomes alm-.-st a duty for all who can afford it, to support this enterprise. On narrower and more selfish grounds, a universal opinion prevails that, as an investment, it will give an excellent return on the outlay.
