CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

TIIK ordinary monthly meeting of the above body was held 011 Tuesday, at 1 p.m. Present: liis Worship the Mayor (Mr Priestly). Crs. Hally, Webber, Richardson, Young and Ferguson. Mr A r thur 13acb, who had been elected to (ill the extraordinary vacancy caused by Cr. Gillet's retiring, was present, and iia\ ing signed Uie usual declaration, took his seat. Both had been complied with, the latter being: Salaries, £00 1& fid ; office expenses, til l'Js 2d. " loLANTim.''—The copyright agent of Gilbert and Sullivan's operas (Mr G. J. Gillon, of Wellington), wrote granting permission to perform the fairy chorus from '• lolanthe,' 1 at the forthcoming concert to riise funds for the new piano for the Public Hall.

An Unwilling Ratki'ayku.—Mr G. W. Russell, of Christchurch, wrote : —1 have received a rate notice from you demanding 10s for rates on property occupied by ir.e. As I have no property in Cambridge and have occupied none since March, 188'J, may I ask what the property referred to is, and why I am served with a notice to pay rates on it.—The clerk had replied that although Mr Russell had sub-let the property, he (Mr Russell) was the Council's lessee, and tho property now being void, they would have to come upon him for rates, &c.

Tim Mail Skuvick.— The Mayor having noticed that tenders had been called for the delivery of the mails next year, nn terms similar to those now existing, had written to the Chief Postmaster in Auck land reminding him of a premise he had given to endeavour to expedite the delivery oil those days 011 which they are. forwarded by road from Hamilton. —Mr 15iss had replied : "The arrangement of the time tables of next year's servicai will rest with the Depart inent, and I do not anticipate any difficulty in arranging for the mails to reach Cambridge within ahout two hours of the train arriving at Hami t in."—The Mayor thought that would be satisfactory, as it would enable country settlers tn get Lheir letters before the office closed at live o'clock.—Mr Hiss had telegraphed to the Mayor as follows : The Postmaster-General has decided that for the present 110 special arrangements are to be undo for d;ivs on which the trail, service is suspended.—The Mayor explained I hat many people thought perhaps the mails would have been f irwarded from Mercer by velocipede, so he had made the enquiry, to which the above was the reply.

Ron Rov.—The secretary'of the Hamilton Amitour Dramatic Club wrote engaging the Public Hall for the 13th inst. and asked what the charge would be. The clerk asked if extra charge would be made for the use of the now piano. —The Hall Committee having the tarilf tinder consideration, it was .resolved to charge the above company 1:2. Thk Housb Paiiadk.— The Farmers' Club applied for the use of the Government paddock and the reserve opoo-ite Messrs McNieol an I C'o.'s yards, for holding a horse show 011 the I'.ltli inst. —Granted.

Tho laying of pipes in Duke-street, the topping of the trees, and the removal and planting of several trees had been completed. The cutting of the fence around the Government Paddock had been completed, and the Committee recommended that the contractor receive an additional 10s on the amount of his contract (4">s), ho having, at their request, done more work than was at first specified ; they also recommended that he be allowed os for clearing the fern from among the trees. —It was stated that the freight on tho 100 pipes for the Dnke-street drain was K 12, and that 100 more could have been delivered for the same amount.— The repoit was then adopted. IVeece was reappointed surfaceman, on similar terms to last year, and it was resolved to invite tenders for I'ie ollice of ciretaker of the Public Hall, for the year commencing November Ist. Town Emiowmknts.--It was resolved that Major Wilson be informed that unless the rent and rates on the town endowments leased by him be p-iid by the end of September, tho Council will re-enter upon the property and have it again leased. Fuii/.k.—Mr Thus. Nixon wrote :" 1 beg to call your attention to the state of tho gorse growing in Bryce, King, and William streets, opposite to my property. When your Council sent mo a notice to grub up the gorse half a'chain wide, under a penalty of HlO, f at once did so, at a cost of over L' 2. Is it fair to allow the owners of the property opposite to neglect to do their half? especially as it is now in seed, and will, if ii- t cleared, soon spread over wh.it is done, f am informed that a portion of it belongs to one of your Honorable Councillors : if so, is it not a bad example to set? Trusting your Council will have it seen to at once, I am, etc." This question I'jrovoked considerable discussion, and Mr Nixon's letter was evontually referred to the Legal and Finance Committee. —From what transpired wo believe the Council intend eradicating all fnr/.e that lies within their province, at once ; anil then adopt vigorous legal measures to compel ratepayers to do likewise.

Uumiisn. —It was resolved to erect a notice board at tho corner of Fort and Vic-toria-street-, forbidding rubbish being deposited on the sides of such streets. He thought that a charge of Is per individual would provide sufficient funds tu pay for the apparatus ; and, if tho G'wuncil would grant the free use of the Imll, and one of its members would take the money at the door, he would undertake to provide the music free of cost, and he thought several musical friends would assist him in tho undertaking, for they were all well aware of the nuisance of having to lift the piano on and off the stage. —The Council at once fell in with the. suggestion. and granted the use of the hall ;Cr. James Voung ottering to take charge of tho door. This closed the business.
