TAUWHARE ANNUAL SPORTS.

i The Tauwbare sports were a decided success this year, and were well attended by ■ people from neighbouring districts, though i there was not a public holiday. Only two i events out of eighteen were local, and the • number of horse laces on the programme proved an extra attraction. The total : receipts amounted to £80. Many stayed for the dance after the sports, which also passed off very well. Most of the events were well-contested, and it can hardly be ■ said that any race was won easily. There were seven competitors for the Tauwharo Cup, and fourteen for the 120 yds. Flat Race, both of which were won by A. McKinnou. A. R. Bailey ran well coining first in the Mile and second in the Cup. The hor.se races wero very good, with the exception of the Hurdle Race. The hurdles, which looked firm and strong, came down very easily, and no doubt made a difference in the result of the race. Bret Harte passed the winning post first, but a protest, entered for crossing, being sustained, the first place wa3 given to Spalpheen, with Young Performer second. Fifteen ponies started in the Pony Kace, which was won by Little Mary. The High Jump was won easily by Orange Lightning. Kingfisher was likely to obtain second place, but was |not brought forward to jump again when called for. VVaverly and Juno went for second place, and the prize was awarded to the latter.
