HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

An adjourned meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening at 7.30 p.m. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr I. Coates) in the chair, and Crs, Salmon, Wood, Missen, Bell and Frear. New Councillors.—The Clerk reported that the poll had resulted in the election of Messrs Jones, Tippen and Knox. These gentlemen having made the usual declaration were congratulated by His Worship and took theii places at the Council table. Baths.—The Clerk reported that only one tender had been received for the olKee of caretaker at the Hamilton West Bath.— Cr. Jones moved that no tender for caretaker for the baths be accepted.—Seconded by Cr. Frear. Cr. Jones, in support of his motion, said that the baths had been built with the ratepayers' money, and they were called " public baths," and he thought they should be open to the public free; but, if required, a certain part of the day might be set apart for persons who wished to teach swimming. On the motion being put, it was lost, the voting being—For the motion: Crs. Jones and Wood. Against: The Mayor, Crs. Knox, Tippen, Salmon, Bell and Frear. The tender which had been received was then opened, but being considered too high, Cr. Knox moved that fresh tenders for caretaker of the baths bo called for next meeting.—Seconded by Cr. Salmon. Cr. Jones moved as an amendment that the Council go to no further expense with the baths. Seconded by Cr. Wood. On the amendment being put the voting was for Crs. Jones, Frear, Wood, and Tippen. Against the Mayor, Crs. Knox, Salmon, Missen, 8011, and on the original motion being put the voting was vice versa ; the latter was therefore declared carried. Cr. Tippen's name was added to the Baths Committee, and it was resolved that the Baths Committee prepare specifications and conditions for leasing the baths. Lease. —The committee appointed to report as to the advisability of leasing a portion of lot 442, Hamilton West, recommended that the coroer with tho house on it be let by auction at an upset price of £4 per annum.
