MELBOURNE WHEAT AND FLOUR MARKET. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency report under date Melbourne 15.— Grain : During the past week the wheat market has been activo, and prices very firm. Some considerable purchases have been mado on shippers' and millers' account, and the outlook seems to warrant tho expectation of a strong if not advancing tendency in the home market. The latest quotation for September shipments is 41s 3d for 4801bs c.f. and i., hut prices locally are relatively higher, as with a 25s freight the cost of cargoes at 4s (id f.o.b, would be 42s lOd. Hence it would seem that London rates must improve further before much business can be done here, still there is nothing against the expectation that the European winter months will bo marked by a higher range of wheat quotations than has ruled since 1882. The world's wheat crops on the wliole are below those of the last four years, and this, coupled with the fact that European stocks are not largo, should tend to induco the result referred to. Tho intercolonial markets are all higher, and in South Australia the same disinclination to sell exists as is complained of here. Since our last report a little rain has fallen in the Northern districts, but a good downpour is wanted to ensure anything like a good crop prospect. Our deliveries of wheat and flour from the country districts by rail are good, amounting in the past woek to 30,502 bags, as against 10,820 bags for the corresponding week in 1887. Our gross deliveries by rail at Spencer-street, Williamstown, Sandridge and town sidings irom the Ist of January to the Ist of September cover 1,453,500 bags of wheat and flour, as against 1,157,020 bags for the same period in 1887. Our exports to date from the port of Melbourne are returned at 687,014 bags of wheat and flour. Wheat: The demand has been brisk throughout the woek, and soma large sales were effected up to 4s sd. To-day we sold medium average milling up to 4s 2d, and inferior lots from 4s upwards. Flour: A fair business has been done, but local millers find some difficulty in securing freight to New South Wales and Queensland since the withdrawal of a number of coasting steamers through the coal strike. We quote stone-made at £8 10s to £8 15s, and roller from £!) 10s upwards.
