[BY TEI.EIiU.U'H—OWN COUUESrONDKNI'.I Thames. Monday. Maky Davis was brought up on remand, charged with the attempted murder of her husband, William Duvies on ISth August last. The evidence of Davies was to the effect that lie left home in the afternoon to look for his wife. Mo called at four hotels and had some beer, but was not drunk when he returned about 9 o'clock, having taken a largo knife from the cowshed, while on his way to cut some ham in the kitchen. The servants were absent, and he had a quarrel with his wife, then he undressed himself, and went to bed on a mattrass on the floor. He had a slight resollcction of having received a blow on the head, and next found himself in the hospital. Minnie Baxter, a servant employed by Davies, stated positively that she was home at 8.45 on the night of the occurrence, and all went to bed at ten o'clock, at which hour Davies had not arrived home. Sho was awakened by Davies and his wife quarrelling, the former threatening to kill his wife and three children, and accused her of having been down to see her fancy man. All was then quiet for some time, but she was again awakened by their quarrelling. Mrs Davies shortly afterwards came into witness' bedroom and said she had killed her husband as he had drawn a knife across her breast and threatened to kill her. He had taunted her and called her names, and sho had picked up a tomahawk and struck him on the head. The case is not yet finished.
